This is a question i get asked all the time. We sell miles of Wood Effect Porcelain Tiles for anything from a small cloakroom floor to huge living spaces. Like someone said Porcelain is Cold to touch where as the real thing, not as much. Most of the Builds we supply it to are installing Water underfloor heating throughout the areas its being fixed to so you avoid this problem. With the phenomenal technology being used to create these tiles they are now available in Lengths of up to 1700, they are looking more and more authentic. With hundreds of factories around the globe all giving it their best shot there really are some true stunners that not only fool the eye but the touch too. The positives of Porcelain really outweigh the negatives, no warping, no swelling, no staining or scratching. We once had a customer that replaced her traditional wood with porcelain because it was so much easy to look after and she didn't need to worry about her cleaner using the wrong product and staining it. Be careful with Amtico as they are not all UV protected and can fade. I would start with her bedroom, that's the area she wil rest. Keep it neutral and and peaceful. Make the curtains cheerful that will be the first thing she'll see when she wakes up. A four feet bed will be comfortable for her and find out how much it will cost to raise the bed ...at a certain age it is more comfortable to get in and out of. Table lamps which by a touch will light up a big alarm clock... Older people always want to know the time! Two bedside tables. Soft carpet for her feet and a big collage on the wall with photos of her family. I would get rid of the wardrobe is is so huge and if you look on your local ebay and put you postcode in you will be able to get a good bargain. Look for a comfy chair too with a floorlight for reading. If space a nice little table (local ebay) will make it complete. Your mum prefers her wall painted but again a roll of cheerful wallpaper for one wall in her bedroom will make it special for her. Try to get rid of all the clutter like those two shopping trolleys perhaps in a cupboard in the hall? I have done a lot of houses up on a shoestring and it is a challenge but can be so satisfying. One thing I have learnt ....ALWAYS finish one room completely before going on to the next room. It helps when you feel a bit down about the project and one look in the finished room gives one a big boost to continue!!! Good Luck.

I agree with the earlier comments. There are too many different materials being used and the drive looks very hard. Consider the following: Extend the upper cladding of the house to the corners. Then the upper storey window will look better positioned. Paint white Change the window to a modern, flat style to coordinate with the longer horizontal windows over the entrance and the extension to the right. Stone or brick clad the lower areas of the house all the same. A warm rusty red brick would look inviting. Extend the roof over the garage door and the entrance further out to create an overhang. Use a dark grey tile. Support the overhang with finished posts on brick bases and grow climbing plants up them for colour. Change the front doors to double wood doors in a welcoming colour like dark mahogany stain or painted red or soft green. Alternatively, have a central door with glass side lights. Cut back the shrub nearest the house and plant colour, either shrubs in other shades or flowers. Plant up the loose graveled area with a mid-sized tree and ivy or pachysandra at the base for easy maintenance. It's a lovely shape house, but needs more uniformity. I hope this gives you some ideas.

A microwave oven is the device I'd find difficult to live without. Rechargeable batteries are so useful. LED lightbulbs. I can remember the days when the choice was between a 40W, 60W or 100W filament light bulb. Now there is so much choice and variety including ultra low energy bulbs like the G9 LED lightbulb of 1.5W I use in a table lamp (gives out the equivalent of 10W). @whirligig - I'm another fan of using a squeege in the shower. It's so quick and easy to keep the shower clean.
