Help with open plan kitchen wall colour please as I’m struggling!

I am hoping for some ideas on wall paint colour for open plan kitchen. I have cashmere units, carrera white quartz worktops and mottled white/grey floor tiles. I have tried skimming stone but it is too close to the unit colour, as is nutmeg white.

I have tried wevet and that goes well with everything but seems a bit too matched (which may be a good thing). Also timeless which is safe but doesn’t look great next to the floor tiles.

Any help would be very welcome.

You need to paint them really neatly onto card, 2 coats. A pain but necessary. I would discount anything with a discernible yellow hue or tinge as it probably won't go. The most important thing is to avoid using something exactly the same tone (light or dark) as it can look odd. Little Greene have a bigger range so it may be worth trying them? When you have sorted a colour I would add some really deep tones somewhere to give some depth.

Whatever you choose in these pale 'greys' it will be close to the units or floor. I think it needs to contrast with the units so would go paler or darker. If paler, and it looks insipid, you can pick out the odd wall in a much darker tone and /or colour to add interest. Painting the testers on card and pinning them up is a good idea.

How about something that has more of a colour rather than a neutral. How do you feel about F&B Setting Plaster, or if you're more adventurous how about Dead Salmon?

Thanks for these. Im not sure if we can do the extra corner bit for number five, but I do like the layout, it will depend on cost, also don't need two tv areas, as we have a front lounge in the house anyway. the office was supposed to be a mixed use room, as a playroom with kids storage and also an occasional bedroom, so sofa bed In there. I know many people have hobs and sinks on islands, but I just think i'll end up dumping things on there.. I have four in the family, two adults, two kids, but we have a lot of people round for entertaining and parties, so space is what I'm after, but was also looking for somewhere the kids can go out of the way from adults if need be. As for kitchen, the reason for having large larder is to put not only food/drink spare fridge in there, but also things we don't use all that often in the kitchen, equipment etc.. I like everything clean and hidden away. The office on number 5 would be separate anyway as this concept includes sliding doors, which fold into the wall, so only entrance would be from outside, not sure if I can afford these yet though. Please keep suggestions coming, or alternatives, all welcome as I can't visualise.. thanks

That depends on lots of things - size of kitchen, natural light sources, which direction the room faces, etc. Pretty much anything will go depending on your colour preferences. If you want to play it safe you could go for a light to mid grey (maybe slightly darker than your worktop) then add colour through accessories. Or you could go for a bold wall colour or feature wall - I like teal / blue-grey-greens but it depends on what you could live with!

Hi Cath, You really have a lot of choice of colour that you could use in these 2 rooms. Can I recommend that you perhaps do some online research on colour consultants that could work with you to find the colour that works for you and your family, rather than get bogged down with looking at pictures online/pinterest/instagram. I know what you mean, but the wall will be knocked to thz dining room and then from dining to living room which is south facing, so I am hoping a little bit more light will filter through there that way... The kitchen area will be very small and I decided to emphasise its size and cosiness ratjer than make it pretend its bigger if that makes sense? I love white kitchens, but the rest of my space will be darker tones and dont want the kitchen to look too 'kitcheny' if that makes sense? 🙈

I would go for a colour. Any colour, but maybe something that could be picked out in a few other things too, like bowls or something you already love and use.

Thanks colourhappy. It is a new extension so new plaster . A mist coat of magnolia has been put on to protect the plaster while the kitchen and flooring went in. I have painted one wall timeless to try it out and another bit wevet. The builders have done a great job and I want it to stay looking good and not be let down by my bit!

The third picture shows where I have painted timeless and the last on the left wevet. I know it is difficult to see.

Where the splash back will go is (left to right) satin slipper, nutmeg white, cornforth white and skimming stone! Ha ha ! Did I mention I’m struggling

Thank you colourhappy. I have tried painting onto lining paper without finding a good colour frustratingly. The Two colours I mentioned are my best choice so far. Wevet looks more elegant but dreary when not sunny. The setting plaster was too pink Ribena Drinker, but thank you.

It's hard to see on a screen, but can you identify what 'colour' the units have in them and try to match a paint colour to it? Have they got an underlying violet hue? If Skimming stone is too similar it may be trying Little Greene, they have a much bigger range.

Hi, thank you for your help. It is a soft warm grey with a slight lavender hue in bright light. I liked it in the showroom and it looks lovely but I didn’t realise how tricky it was to choose something that didn’t bring out the lilac too much. It is like f&b elephants breath. I will go and get a sample card of little greene tomorrow and try them. Thank you again.

I would look at the Slaked Lime and Rolling Fog options on Little Greene. They come in pales and deeps so you could go for a very pale and punctuate it with some deep in places. This site gives alternative colours.

I am going to put antique mirror glass just in front of the hob. The palazzo one is beautiful, I have a quote and am going to choose the colour this week.

I’m with colourhappy on this, you need a strong colour on at least one wall, possibly two (opposite ones) my kitchen is mostly pale grey with a run of dark low units along one wall, I’ve the walls all white but I’m going to paint the opposing walls dark grey as there is still something missing in my eyes yet!

My kitchen is all Skimming Stone and it would have looked very bland unless at least one wall was a very strong colour and tone.

I would have poo poo’d this idea before as I’d wonder what the point was, but make your self a mood board using the colours roughly in the same ratios. Are you planning on having some artwork as this may be the lynchpin that helps it hang all together. Pulling colours through from that will help the scheme. Tonal can be soft and soothing but needs layering up with texture to create a cohesive scheme. Alternatively pops of bright colour can look amazing and your kitchen is lovely and bright with good bones. What is the rest of your house like, and what is your style?

Hi Susan would you consider putting a green shade behind the units, my kitchen extension is mostly painted in Piano Key and behind the units is Leverett both Colourtrend ..my kitchen unit's are Salter Stone, the contrast is lovely
