Best sofa to put on a tiled floor with wet underfloor heating system?

I’m trying to find a sofa for our new extension which has a new wet underfloor heating system and is tiled with cement encaustic tiles. It’s a J-shaped space so needs a modular sofa so we can design it to the space, but all the modern style sofas we like sit very close to the floor.

Does the sofa (or any furniture) need any kind of minimum clearance to ensure full circulation and proper working of a wet underfloor heating system ?

You're not meant to have any flat based furniture hence not under kitchen cabinets and I think I've read before it needs 100mm of circulation space However having just googled it I can't find that anywhere now! Could you check with the supplier?

Hi,

It is advisable not to put leather next to a heat source as this will dry the leather out quicker. Obviously the best practice would be to put a fabric sofa, as there wouldn't be any problems with this.

Saying this I have a leather sofa with a wet underfloor heating system and the sofa looks fine after 8 years.

It depends on the flooring. A good engineered laminated flooring may be OK (can have a natural wood surface), but you may have to ask the manufacturer, and you may not get any guarantee. I think Junckers make a flooring designed for this, but it will be expensive. Avoid solid oak, as this has a life of its own. However any sort of timber will reduce the heating efficiency of the floor. A concrete floor with hot water heating is best matched with ceramic or stone tiles (and a few rugs for softness). The limestone tiles we put in this barn conversion have a very 'soft' look. Maybe you could add timber to the room elsewhere?

Hello@jones1978, We had the UFH installed 4 years ago and when researching it, I didn't even consider rugs and trapped heat; my thinking was that is 'they' say you can use carpet, a rug wouldn't make a difference. Well, as I discovered, it depends. If your rug is one of those heavy, high density knots wool rugs, the chances are that it will keep the heat trapped. However, a rather light, either cotton, sisal, viscose or thin wool rug doesn't seem to affect the overall temperature. I think the overall room temperature also depends on your insulation. The office room in the photos above is basically an internal room, it has no exterior walls or windows, so we actually rarely put the heating on in there even in December - and hubby works from home most of the week. Our living room, on the other hand, is the only room in the house with single glazing (conservation area rules) and a heavy rug; it's the coldest room in the house and looses heat pretty quick if we don't close the shutters. Luckily for us, the fireplace is functional and we light a fire almost every evening in the winter. I've been thinking about buying a thinner rug, but it really doesn't bother us that much. Make of this what you will, but personally, I still love UFH and I'd rather live with no rugs than go back to radiators... Good luck with your project! @mckevis - congrats on finishing! Cost of wet system underfloor heating and recommendation

Hi there, We are just in the process of getting UFH put into our downstairs renovation. The spaces is about 50m sq and we have gone with a low profile wet system from the underfloor heating store (the one in all the house magazines with Sarah Beeny lying on the floor!!) We went with a 4 zone system (pic below) and the cost was £2,300 although we did get a bit of a discount because our interior designer (Gina at Create Perfect) gets trade discount which she passed onto us. The company were super helpful and the customer service was excellent. We had three quotes and whilst these guys were the cheapest when talking through the differences with the other companies, other than better marketing and fancier branding, I could see no technical difference in the product to justify the higher price tag! We are getting our builders to fit in and they are charging £2000. This includes taking up all the old tiles and removing the old grouting (pic below) which was a day or so and then laying the system. We'll have to pay the plumber and electrician to connect it up and both have said no more than a day, so £200 electrician and £130 plumber. So in total for 50 sq meters we'll have paid about £4650. Anyone insulate retro-fit underfloor heating before? LVT or tiles?

Hi retro fit is absolutely fine however there are procedures to check insulation levels that need to be followed. I have had many years experience of using Retro fit ufh system and they can be as low as 20mm. I have also mixed floors from retro to new build Which maximise heated area and especially with new and old for an extension. This is very popular at the moment but it's not an off the shelf pack as many factors need to be assessed in early stages. As a consultant specialising in ufh systems for past 10 years, I have a wealth of experience. It can become a costly problem if systems are not specified correctly. Have you considered having a sofa made bespoke. It’s no more expensive than good high street outlets if you go direct to the manufacturer. There’s quite a few in Long Eaton, near Nottingham.
