Brick tiles or brick effect wallpaper?

We are facing a dilemma in decorating 20m2 of wall with brick tiles. The cost of the bricks and the labour to fit them make them quite expensive now. I came across a brick effect wallpaper though which might give us the same industrial /new York loft style look. Are these type of wallpapers as effective though? Are there any other options?

Some of these wallpapers look really effective. Try to think ahead to the future - do you think you’ll always be happy with the brick effect / industrial look? Wallpaper will be much easier (and cheaper) to change than the brick tiles.

Hi Panikos,

I use wallpaper murals a lot on projects but I must confess I avoid brick and random stone as they can look very false, they need the texture and depth to get the full effect.

The point Tamp made was valid, if you use a brick slip it will be the devils own job to get this off later should you want to re decorate so brick slips are a long term decision. Brick slips can look fabulous, worth the extra money......

Have you looked at printed paper rusted steel or old wood planks?.........these are very effective in printed form.

Regardless of what you choose I would advise getting a sample and pinning it to the wall for a few days, look at it in different light (day & night).....see it a fresh when you come down in the morning etc etc..... worth the effort to ensure you make the right decision

As always some fab points. I have considered price but the cost of paper was far less than having every wall skimmed but to be honest paper was more feasible for the time frame as there is no chain we can complete quickly. The 3 living rooms come off the hall and the bottom one is straight ahead of the front door which will be the dining room so I was thinking wallnut floor in hall and dining room but I'd like to have carpet in the other 2 reception rooms which will be library and sitting room as I have wood floors now in my sitting room and as much as I love the way it looks I feel like I'm forever cleaning it. It seams silly to place pet the hall though especially with children's muddy feet. There is no cornices in any of the upstairs rooms so I think brick effect paper will work well in the master. I'm stil not sure wetha to do all walls or just feature wall. We have wallnut furniture which I love so I think it will be a fab room. My daughters room I'm most excited bout it's just trying to decide how much of which colour more Grey or more pink or equal both I'm leaning more towards more grey because it will be easy to change the pink as she ages. My step son is difficult as he had probably had a different room every year in our house as he's aged he's gone from toy story to batman to Barcelona fc. So now I'm saying no to themed rooms. I was thinking maybe a mural on the wall behind the bed maybe black and white New York sky line or something and keep everything else very simple black and white??? The floor boards aren't in great condition and I know I probably stand alone when I say this but I don't actually like the look of original floor boards unless they are perfect. I agree with the decor flowing through the house and aside from the kids rooms it will all be pretty neutral. The dining room leads out into a beautiful garden so I was toying with trying to bring the outside in with some nature tones I'm just not sure how to go about it? Any suggestions for a dining table colour as it will sit on wallnut floor or am I just being picky and it doesn't really matter, just in my head an oak table on wallnut floor doesn't look great. Wish I'd taken pictures so I could show before and after I'll have to remember to when we move

Thank-you One Plan, yes, I agree, plain glass might be easiest, presumably toughened for behind a gas hob?, but I do love colour and the handmade slightly rustic feel feel, so wondering if anything more decorative might work?, although I can see the point for keeping the bricks on show behind glass. Planning terracotta floor tiles, beech, red, cream and possibly copper accents, but at the moment the space is still being built!

If you have to have all new plaster and tiles, why not just paint it? And a slate effect vinyl floor sounds good to me. Other option would be to go for wood effect, for a warmer feel (this one is from B&Q) Simple white tiles will probably be the cheapest. But I do like this grey version. I would tile almost up to the ceiling around the bath and shower and then up to or just above the window sill (like in the pic) behind the toilet and sink. Paint the rest. Fresh white shower curtain and bath mat, towel rack in front of the radiator maybe? (found this one on Amazon). I would also swap the mirrored cabinet for a larger mirror and add some lighting above it.

Steve, I would line the walls after rigourous preparation work. One thing you could do is cross line the walls. Basically this is to make good the walls with easi-fill (with the woodchip paper off), rub down and size the walls with a thinned out coat of paste. Let the size dry fully and hang lining paper either vertically or horizontally. Once hung and dried, look at the condition of the walls re-fill the bad areas again and rub down. Just size the filled areas only and then re-line the walls in the crossed direction of the first hang. So if you hung vertically on the first, hang horizontally on the second hang and vice versa. Once complete paint as normal. You should see a marked difference in the smoothness of the walls,

Oh we are looking at he same thing as my kitchen will be more industrial style. I’ve found some great brick slips but yes it is more expensive.
Could you do smaller sections of the wall perhaps? Is it for a kitchen or something else?

Ps the brick wallpapers I’ve found so far as not good!
Someone does a mural on here that looks nice but again, hard to tell up close without a sample and I don’t think they do them

hi all,I ordered a sample of a relatively expensive brick effect wallpaper and I will do exactly what you suggested! Put them on the wall to have better feel. I attach a couple of pictures to show you the space. So it's the wall either side of the beam, which will be exposed and painted in grey. You will also be able to see the opening to the front room for which we will use glass and aluminium doors as a room divider. it feels like nothing can beat the real thing, however you all have a correct point if we where to change our minds in the future!
