Fireplace location in family room

I have the option to chose the location of the fireplace in my new family room and would like to get some expert opinion on which wall the fireplace should go on. The attached image shows the location of the fireplace and the red box shows the other potential location. What seating plan would work with either of those locations? Thanks.

Downstairs WC/utility room or "family room"?
Comments (12)I appreciate that it is difficult to know without seeing the layout of the house so here's a rough drawing to scale that I have done of the proposed new layout to help - light blue line = existing glass doors to kitchen, red line = proposed new glass doors to lounge, black lines = existing walls, dark blue lines = proposed new studwork walls and lighting layout (probably will use downlights for maximising the light and lamps in the reading room as well). Hope this gives more of a clear idea of what we are planning to do - I say "utility room" but actually our idea is to do something similar to what OnePlan suggested utilising the understairs cupboard off the WC as a utility cupboard with the washing machine/tumble drier in and then hang a drying rack from the ceiling. The cloakroom area would give us a valuable space for shoes and coats as currently you walk straight through into the main body of the house and mess gets everywhere (we have a small dog that gets very muddy)! The floor will be tiled the same as the hallway through the cloakroom and WC and wood flooring laid in the reading room with the fireplace. Comments (9)I like the idea of grey as we have blue in our sitting room and would like something a bit different. I agree with adding a pattern, I’m toying with keeping plum in an accent colour as we have it in the adjoining kitchen/diner and I think it would be better to keep some connection. We did have a rug previously but I felt it made the room smaller/darker (it was the same plum colour as the chimney breast so perhaps it was a poor colour choice). Comments (3)If possible block the doors to the hallway have your TV there L shape sofa on the long wall and arm chairs facing the sofa or the TV just in front of patio doors. Otherwise above the fireplace but it should be eye level, you don't want it to high as that's not great for your back or neck over time. I do consultations, I could draw up some floorplans for you if you wanted and some elevations so you can see how it would all look etc. There are lots of doors coming off this room so perhaps closing one is best option if it still works for the flow of the house. Comments (2)I agree with the above. The fireplace needs to be central to your main seating area. So either where it is or a bit more central with that being your main seating area. Or at the other end of the room. I assume one part of the room will be for either dining or with accent chairs and a table in-between or something? 10 years agoI would say keep to the original plan as this would allow only one wall to be used , then your TV and Fireplace can be at the focal point of your seating arrangement . You would create a better surround sound from your TV amp also . I believe combining the TV , Fireplace and speaker system would work well .
You can also add fireplaces to other rooms if this is desirable balanced flue option fireplaces are very versatile . I have attached a couple of images for your consideration .
