tall trough planters

Looking to separate my drive from neighbours we have no fencing in our driveway wanted ideas on tall modern troughs and stockists trying to achieve this look to block from next door we are in a development which prohibits fencing from being put up

I’ve seen some nice metal plant troughs online at Primrose, as well as Wayfair and Amazon. To keep the plants happy buy the biggest you can afford as plants in small pots never fare well and can dry out quickly. The bigger the pot the less watering!

Although it may not be the first idea that comes to mind when facing foxes, a cheap solution is to get a man to urinate around the perimeter. This sounds odd and a little foul, but because foxes have good noses (like dogs) and are territorial (like wolves) they will smell it and understand it as the area belonging to a different pack and avoid your garden. Don't let this stop you from getting those planters you mentioned though! They sounded stylish, and the white will bounce more light around a city garden.

We need to secure the garden as we have 3 little dogs, so need some kind of fencing but want it to be softened, with just a hint of a garden behind. Excuse the hand drawn ideas, am no Picasso, the first is a gabion styled planter with trellis behind, but should the stones match with the brick of the house or contrast, as yet we haven't chosen what to do with the driveway. The second is a wooden trough, with a bow stopped fence behind, with some kind of wrought iron panel inserted into fence. Both options would have a wrought iron side gate. I would maybe like the trough to be filled with maybe lavender. Has anyone done anything like this, and grateful any comments or suggestions. Thanks Chris

Love your terrace. Great time to plant evergreen shrubs, in fact any shrubs. You also won’t have to water much with all the rain we’ve been having. Some shrubs are evergreen and others are deciduous (lose their leaves in autumn). Be careful with large olive trees as they can find It hard to survive our cold wet winters, that’s why you see them more in Italy and Greece rather than the Lake District. Some easy evergreen shrubs that cope well (along with max height) are: Viburnun Tinus (8 ft) Photinia (8 ft) Fatsia Japonica (10-15 ft) Mahonia (6 ft) Euonymous fortunei (2 ft spreads outwards) Lavendar (1 ft) Choisya (6ft) Pittosporum (6 ft) its good to start with evergreens, then add a few deciduous shrubs (roses, butterfly bush, hydrangeas etc) and then you can add perennials (flowers that come up year after year) and bulbs such as daffodils. Beer crates! Or any kind of crates but the bottle crates are really strong and stackable and more to the point have holes for drainage. Not sure how readily available they are in UK but whenever we take a trip across the channel we bring some beers back from Belgium or Germany and pay a few extra euros deposit on the crate. Should take them back but always forget so now we’ve got a stack of them in the garden. Very useful tho, I’ve used them as a workbench:). I’ve used polystyrene packaging for filling pots before as well and it’s quite effective. Depending what you’re making it from I don’t see no reason why you couldn’t use rocks or gravel (look on gumtree, freecycle etc.) as well. If it’s scaffold boards use some thick posts on the inside corners to screw into and as an added measure some galvanized steel corner braces on the outside. Line the inside with some heavy duty plastic to stop wood from rotting.
