Paint interior 1930 doors?

To paint or not to paint?! We have wooden 1930’s internal doors which would need to be striped to get rid of orangey varnish finish. The doors are marked in several places with new handles etc so was thinking of painting them instead? Wood work all white. Was thinking of a colour if we were to paint them ie cornforth white or skimming stone? Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I think they look lovely how they are. They also look to match that stacked wood you have.

Personally I would leave them :)

Thank you Robyn. They actually look a lot better in this photo. If you zoom in they are pretty badly marked so I think they would require a lot of sanding. Appreciate your comment, thank you.

Well AJ, I am really tempted, I know with coloured doors it is all about the finish, but we do have professional decorators, so it might be now or never, should it be properly black or a very dark grey? thing is, my husband usually lets me get on with it, I think I should listen when he is really doubtful. On the other hand, we have to do the whole house because of the rewiring, so it is an opportunity for coherence and unity instead of our usual mishmash. Dunno

We would always recommend replacing original doors with timber. It would be a shame to lose the authentic look and although UPVC composite doors are much better than they used to be they still don't look like real wood. Our wood doors have the same multi point locking system as a UPVC door for high security and the U-Value (insulation) is the same. No cold drafts with our doors. Also with our Teknos paint finish you can match it to any colour you want. Farrow & Ball french grey is very popular at the moment. We recently did this custom door with bespoke stained glass. The client wanted the glass to replicate the original stained glass but wanted new seals etc so we re-designed the glazing for them and they matched the sage green paint that they had used around their home. I hope you manage to persuade your partner to either keep the original door or replace it with wood. Good Luck!

IMO - paint. Mind you, I would say that as I'm going through exactly the same thing with my internal doors (from white to colour as I'm bored of white woodwork). Conforth White was one of the colours that were top of my list - however I ended up going for Worsted which I'm really pleased with:

* Edit - yes the bottom picture needs another coat just in case anything thought that was the finished door

I love the character of how they are now, I wouldn't paint them personally. Maybe a matte oil or varnish in a colour to complement the original wood?

I would paint them, I had doors like these years ago and they looked much better painted, though it is personal preference of course. I would paint them a darker version of the wall colour, not lighter. What is the wall colour?

Another vote for paint, I had the same dilemma myself, my floor clashed with the oak doors, painted them white! Whales and woodwork are white as well! Never looked back and so much more light bouncing around too.

I have very similar doors in my 1934 house. Upstairs they are all painted white, but downstairs I had the sitting room one dipped, then varnished it. By the way, the colour was much the same before varnishing. I keep dithering whether to paint my sitting room one or not, so it remains au natural for now. Decisions, decisions!

We painted ours and got new handles, they look great! And I like the fact there are few dents and scrapes in them, adds to the character!

I also agree to paint it, either white or in a light grey, that wooden look gives a feeling of old fashion.
