Renovating Design Dilemma Kitchens

what should we do with our kitchen/tv room

We would like to make the kitchen/tv room into one room. Both rooms are quite dark so I’d like to let more light in...but how? I did think about bifold doors or putting a full length window in where the sink is currently. We will be replacing the kitchen and knocking down the wall connecting the two rooms. We could also knock through to the utility room and and downstairs toilet but I would want these rooms replacing elsewhere. What could we do? What’s possible? Apart from the obvious knocking through.

Wow yes lots to waken up to and I'm so grateful for the help! Thanks so much! I tried mforr to find one o those room colouring things for a shop here in the uk and whilt you can do it with dulux paint brand, it didnt seem to like my iPad so need to get onto it on my laptop! Having slept on it I'm thinking I like the idea of doing the kitchen only in colour, and then having highlights of the colour in the LR with cushions perhaps. We considered curtains too but I'm not sure if it would crowd the LR. We are sure that the coffee table is too big also, but I love it (it has a glass top and we can present things in the drawer below). We also have no dining table so this is our only space for setting out food! I'm still liking the green, but the yellow goes well too. We have a tea/coffee jars on our kitchen work top (might be just visible in the pictures) which are green yellow and grey, so if I bring these along to the DIY shop they could colour match those for me. (Along with the list you sent me too mforr!) I will def be back on to show you all the results!! :)

I think this kind of TV in the kitchen is amazing, we are the supplier of these. The effect is great, it is currently one of the most popular products in modern kitchens. TV is hidden behind the toughened mirror, and when it is turned off, it is not visible. Stoneham Kitchens, what do you think?

No tv in the kitchen, but our computer is there and we use that for music and some catch up tv while we eat sometimes. (Alsi handy for online recipes.) But it's just the two of us now. When we had family around meals were family catch up and chat times. Our only tv is in the sitting room. Bedroom is a tv free space.

Hi! I studied architecture in Edinburgh! If this is not your longterm home and ensuring return on investment is important to you then I recommend getting some sketch designs and talking them through with local estate agents who are familiar with the local housing market. You could show them a couple of options and get their opinion on which is likely to get the higher resale value, or which is likely to sell quickest - sometimes you don't get a lot more money but it's a configuration that is more sought after so it sells faster, which can also be a benefit when you come to sell. Most of the work I do is creating more open plan living, this is the general trend and has been for the last 20 years or so. I redesigned my Edinburgh flat to have an open plan kitchen dining lounge and it sold for the highest price achieved in that tenement or that street, though I did get lucky selling at the height of a market bubble at the time. Hi Joanne, sorry if I'm being a bit slow here but is this the wall you are planning to knock down?

And you're looking for ideas on how to brighten up the space? Where are you thinking about putting bi-folds?

i think you're going to get more light with the wall down anyway. Bifolds would look good, is that also a single storey extension? If so a rooflight would let in more light. The carpet won't help in the sitting room, choose a floor that bounces light such as wood. Again, although you can see light is bounced off an area of the worktop a light worktop and splashback will help (Maybe a mirrored one?). The rooms don't actually appear that dark in the pics but I think a warmer neutral on the walls will help as the white is taking on a blueish tinge so assume you face north? A mirror opposite the doors in the sitting room would also help

Changing the worktops to a light colour will make all the difference. I've just had a new kitchen installed and even in a small area - about 2.5 metre sq - having a white worktop has completely transformed the area. The previous matt black surface just absorbed all the light. I've painted the walls white as well (previously a creamy colour) and now the area is so bright I've had to buy a blind for the window! Therefore, I'd suggest staying with the layout and looking at the colours for your new kitchen rather than creating unnecessary openings that will mean you lose cupboard space or other rooms. It's not just style, but function that is also important, if the space does not work for you, you will soon fall out of love with the house.
