Can I restore the shine on black granite worktops?

We had new black granite worktops installed just a couple of months ago. From day 1 I have really struggled to keep them looking clean. Already there are areas that have lost their shine and have seemingly permanent finger prints. I'm wondering if the combination of hard water and the wrong kind of surface cleaner is the problem? Any tips on whether I can restore the granite would be very much appreciated.

I have black granite work tops and a huge amount of them and an island - my reason for choosing is that I believe granite is a lot stronger in the dark colours where as marble is stronger in the light colours - I am (hope husband doesn't see this!) a little bit bored of the black work tops - they are classic but a bit dead - next time, if there is ever a next time, I would not play so safe and would go for light work tops with a bit more interest. I would steer clear of work tops unless you are prepared to really look after them and treat them regularly! As for walls - I would go light - and ensure it is a paint that you can wash splattering off! Not a basic emulsion! That way, by going light you can change colour of kitchen accessories at any time to freshen it up and update it. If I was planning a new kitchen now, I would probably go for light tops with up stands and then have a feature surface in a different material - perhaps a rounded wooden block at the end of a unit as a feature. I love my kitchen but I have played it a bit safe, on reflection!!

I have black granite work tops - they are fab - I use a granite cleaner on them - just literally as you would clean any surface - a rub over.... The make is 'Method' - available from most supermarkets. HOWEVER, if I was choosing again, I would have gone for something less 'safe'!! I chose a granite that was very uniform and wished I had perhaps gone for one with a little more interest in the pattern - if you know what I mean! It is a natural product and wish I had gone for something with swirls or a dramatic line through it..... As I say, was playing safe at the time as it was part of a large extension and had far too many decisions to make!! Think I am right in saying that darker granites are generally more hard wearing than lighter ones - but don't quote me on that!

Hi again, It has been a while but we now have samples of everything. The white marble top will be on the island which is the grey colour, with an oak end-grain butchers block. The dark granite will be on the white units around the perimeter and the floor will be engineered oak parquet laid in a herringbone pattern. In the photo the granite looks a bit darker than in real life. Both worktops will be matt finished between a honed and polished finish. We are not completely decided on the walls yet and I am considering timeless or purbeck stone/Johnston’s copy of purbeck stone as the budget is getting tight towards the end of our project! The room is north, north east facing and I would prefer to keep it slightly warmer toned, than too cool. We will decide on the splashback in the new year. I originally wanted antique mirror effect but it might be too much with all the different surfaces. The other alternatives I am considering are marble metro-style tiles or plain glass. If you have any thoughts I would be pleased to hear them. Thanks again for your help.

If you are still considering replacing a laminate worktop we can help you with that. Also, what Schmidt does and I absolutely love it is an inset of a stone into laminate worktop so you just pick a spot on your worktop you would use for hot pots or as a chopping board and you're killing two birds with one stone. Check the picture
