Living room furniture lay-out advice
Comments (10)Hi Clair, It is indeed a very tricky room with all the doorways around and the need to keep flow. The best in these cases is usually to go for flexible pieces of furniture that can be moved around easily to adjust the room to your needs, so I'm afraid that an L shaped sofa might not be the best choice as you mention yourself no matter how you look at it you might be disrupting a flow somewhere. Poufs, Ottomans, Small vintage nursing chairs (these are on wheels so can be moved around), are all great options. For example this picture where the poufs are placed under the coffee table and can be taken out when additional seating or even side tables are required. Comments (9)Whilst I would also prefer a hallway as the entrance at least you have the porch so people are not immediately in your living room when you open the door. It's a lovely room and i think the existing furniture arrangement is much better than using it as one big space. I'd keep the tv over on the fire side of the room because it will be a cosier space at night and is a feature. It's then away from the staircase which might be draughty and more of a thoroughfare. I also have trouble visualising how the under staircase tv would work.(although maybe One plan has a good idea for this. I'd then use the other half of the room as your snug/reading area with a couple of chairs and bookcase between the two doors. I'd use a large rug to define and bring this area together. You might also have room for a small console type table next to the front door to drop keys, phones etc. Alternatively, if you have your sofa in the same position as the existing pic you could have a sofa table (see pics below, lots of different types depending on your style) behind it for the same purpose as well as adding interest rather than just seeing the back of the sofa. Good luck....See MorePlease help, living room layout advice - new start!
Comments (28)Carolina, thank you, you give so much time to thas - it has given us loads to think about. We really would need to get used to the room being divided by the sofa though. We have had it that way but it made the room very small and squashed, feeling we were all sitting so close to the fire and the rest of the room unused. I have also had two 3 seater sofas coming out from the fireplace, facing each other, with a table between. I liked that as it opened the room up and it felt 'social', my partner liked it less because of difficulty viewing the tv. At the minute Ring the sofas form more of an L shape, on the wall to the left and the wall facing the windows. With the TV between the windows we can all watch TV and see the fire, without sitting behind each other. The open space is great. The downside of this layout is that if as a family we are sitting on both sofas some people can't see each other so conversation is difficult. Another thought for me was 2 of the Harrington chaise sofas - as one would fit in front of the window and stretch into the alcove beside the fire, the other would sit facing the TV and wouldn't stick out beyond the wall where the door is. This would be great for seeing each other and talking. There would still be space for 2 chairs or a sofa on the left hand wall. Unfortunately for good family time, the compromise might have to be 'looks'....See MoreAwkward Living Room - Layout Ideas // Advice
