Help with hall/stairs/landing

Hi everyone,

I will soon be re-painting my hall/stairs/landing and having the carpet and hard flooring replaced.

There are no windows directly onto this area so it can be very dark, and it's a three storey terraced house. Here is the current hallway and stairs (sorry for the bad pic):

All I know for definite so far is that the ground floor hallway will be travertine like this (because we are having it as a new kitchen floor that will continue into the hallway and cloakroom):

In terms of the painting, I kind of like it how it is (a light cream, with white woodwork), but it really does need a fresh coat now. It feels like a big job though, so I want to see something for it if you know what I mean. I feel like a bit of a bore having it pretty much the same again. However, I hate coloured walls of any kind, hate wallpaper, and don't like grey either(!)

So the main options I am considering are:

A) White walls and bannister spindles; light coffee coloured skirtings and bannister tops

B) A darker neutral for the walls - maybe a "greige" sort of colour - with white woodwork and natural bannister tops again

C) Completely the same again - light cream walls, white woodwork, natural bannister tops

Above all I want my home to feel warm and welcoming, which makes me a bit unsure about option A. The lack of natural light makes me unsure about option B. Option C is just really boring, and will feel like a lot of work only to make it look like it does now only cleaner.

I would like some sort of contrast between the woodwork (door frames & skirting) and the walls, so I won't be going for white and white.

My other dilemma is the stair carpet. Again, I kind of like the one I've got but not the tone of it. It can look a bit mustardy sometimes, so I'd like to go for another berber carpet but in a lighter neutral. But of course, I want to make sure it goes with the travertine floor and whatever paint I go for.

Style-wise, I love traditional, classic, timeless looks and dislike anything very modern. The house is only about 20 years old but I love rustic and cottagey interiors.

Can anyone advise or inspire me? I realise I sound like the most boring homeowner ever sorry!

what i would recommend is to get paint samples, put few on the walls on each floor and different locations, it'll help you decide for sure.

I'd go for option B.

I think you need some hint of another colour, but I can understand your dislike of coloured walls and wallpaper (you're not alone in the wallpaper loathing!)

Other than a greig colour, have you though of something a bit like F&B Dimity? which will give you the contrast between your white woodwork and the walls, whilst still keeping it pale and neutral, but adding a bit of warmth to counter of the lack of natural light. I think it will also compliment your new travertine

Hi Sarah, what a beautiful space! My immediate thoughts would be to go bolder (you'll get why if you take a look at my profile ;)) I think a rich dark green would look amazing against the current shade of your woodwork / bannister but would then work equally well if you ever changed that to white. It's often assumed that dark colours will make a space feel enclosed but this is not always the case. You have a lovely window there for natural light and if you added a large statement pendant it would all look just beautiful! A couple of examples I'd suggest would be "Friston Forest" by Albany and "Puck" by Little Greene, National Trust Collection. Just my thoughts. Kate x

As you have a 6-year old, a slightly darker colour would work,- say a darker grey, but do the walls etc in Satin so they can be easily wiped down, and light reflects off shiny surfaces. I do like the darker bookcase, and again would go with another dark colour - we all need changes every so often. You have blue in other places, so how about a Midnight Blue for the bookcase? You have lovely floors, and it seems such a shame to cover them with rugs - leaving them natural would expand the space visually. With the handrail, I would leave it with the varnished oak, as this is one place that picks up marks more than anywhere else.

I would go with the light grey tones, as this will create a nice neutral overall base colour. Possibly even lighter than the image attached. This will allow you to bring colour in in other ways, and you will not limited by having to tie in with pink.

I like bright colours, but when you live with bright patterns I think they can be too in your face. The colours are lovely but not in equal parts. Duck egg blue always looks elegant, mixed with pale, minty greens and different shades of pink it can look lovely. You must get the quantity of bold colour right though. Deep pink could be a chair or cushion, the colour easiest on the eye can be the walls, or a neutral colour works well in a large space. Neutral can be shades of brown, green, yellow, muted red, it doesn't have to be beige, cream or natural.

Love the travertine.

Why not leave exactly as is us but choose a better stair covering? A neutral, natural colour/material together with your new flooring would freshen things up, I think.

Another vote for B. I think it would look very classy with the travertine, and would go with the rustic look you like.

As for carpet I got a great one from Carpetright, 100 per cent wool, Berber style in an ‘almond’ shade. Looked great with a light taupe wall, but they had lots of neutrals to choose from.
