Stair runner or wall to wall carpet?

I have just traipsed around carpet shops on a soggy bank holiday weekend... and am non-the-wiser about what to do with my stairs and landing. I LOVE the idea of a higher end stair runner (thinking a bold stripy Roger Oates runner https://www.rogeroates.com/products/runners/neutral/fitzroy-black60/) but just can't afford it - roughly £800 just for my new-build stairs)

Also, i would like to match a plain landing carpet to the runner... so thought that carpet shops would be a good bet. I'm disappointed - even John Lewis only had 1 stripy carpet option in a 0.66m width (i.e. a stair runner width), a couple more in a 1m width and no options where it was obvious that there was a matching plain carpet for my landing!

It seems like only Carpet Right had explicit matching stripy and plain carpets as an option - that can't be right, can it? Is there something i am missing re. stair carpets?

Any advice would be appreciated (i.e. i'd rather not pay for a 4m wide carpet when i only need 1m max for my stairs!)

Since you asked about runners OR wall to wall carpet, I thought I would show you something we did to accommodate my husband's desire for carpeted stairs (less slippery), neither of us really wanting a runner, and my dislike of vacuuming risers. Not the best pic since this was taken more to show a couple places they needed to touch up paint, and is a close up of our basement stairs but here you go.

I am really pleased with how they turned out, and it ties the flooring on our main floor and upper floor together well. You could of course also do this with a fancier patterned/coloured carpet :)

I find so many carpet sellers have such a limited range, including John Lewis. I chose my carpet from a local family run flooring company who had an amazing range of carpets, from budget to top of the range. I chose a stripy Crucial Trading carpet for the stairs and landing, and a pale mushroom for the bedrooms. I didn’t really bother matching the two, and they look fine. The Crucial Trading carpet was expensive, £1000 for stairs and small landing alone, but there were cheaper options. The company I used are in Hitchin, Herts. I can give you their details if you are nearby?

Have a look at this, available from your more local independent retailers. I used to sell this in our old shop. http://www.lifestyle-floors.co.uk/carpet/page/1
people pay £50 -£70 a m2 for practically identical carpet from crucial trading. Independents will be better and likely cheaper for decent carpets.

It’s glued at the joins between the steps but then looser on the horizontal and vertical of step itself. So you can see the white underneath the runner if you get right down to look at it, but can’t actually remove the runner. I’m pretty new to DIY and it’s a bit daunting!

You are quite right, it is the tone that needs to be similar, for example in the bedroom pic above the carpet is a lot lighter than the wall behind the bed, but much the same as the side walls. It works because they are just a similar colour, but lighter and darker. The herringbone stair carpet is darker, yes a similar tone. It just works. Hope that makes sense! I have Egyptian Cotton in my bedroom and hall, stairs and landing. I chose quite a colourful carpet on the stairs because I love colour, but that herringbone one is lovely!

Try these people. Loads of herringbone and some quite bold ones too. They do pieces for the landing and turns. I had a runner from them. Prices are reasonable but you have to do the measuring yourself and send them a drawing if you want turns etc. Mine was quite a dark narrow staircase. that link isn't working. Cheltenham stripe from lifestyle. it's as good a carpet as crucial tradings Mississippi. my stairs and landing would be £400 in carpet, underlay you'll pay £3 a metre local for what carpetrite offer at £7. £180 fitting...

ps. you'll find the pattern repeats so a good fitter will use a shitter piece and you'll get 4 steps off a 3m long run, but 4 times so a 3m x4m piece of carpet will do up to 16 steps. in 4 pieces that you won't see a joint in. or you'd get the stairs from the landing offcuts. if you're lucky and your landing is 2m wide x 4m long then the off cut from a 4m wide carpet will do all of your stairs. ex. carpet geek

I use Ollerton Carpets. My fitter tells me what sizes to order and they deliver - much cheaper than the big stores and the same product.

edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk definitely have some matching stripes and plains. We were recommended them by our local family run carpet shop.

I'll.be painting our treads and risers before fitting a runner in the coming weeks as @Emma is cracking the whip now. stripe carpet too so will post some pics. in fairness it's a 20 minute job fitting a runner. You could probably manage it yourselves too if it's a straight run.
