Gas fireplace or wood-burning fireplace
Comments (19)Hi, yes they're actual flames with all the natural movement and variation you'd expect (and the volume of flames/heat output is controllable with it being gas). When the stove is set up, there are ceramic 'logs' and embers positioned (that do look very realistic) and also some stuff that looks like wire that they call Emberglow. This wiry stuff is near invisible and spread/clumped at the bottom and this causes the flames to vary and lick and dance upwards. We were worried a fake wood burner would look naff and were disappointed when we knew we couldn't have the real thing, but went to see this in action in a showroom and were impressed! It helps that the model we have also comes as a real wood burner and the cast body is identical for both....See MoreOpening up fireplace in 18th century cottage restoration
Comments (1)Hi Sarah, the cracked lintel is probably the reason the fire has been bricked up like that - it's a major structural problem and means the lintel cannot do its job anymore so definitely will need replacing or supporting with an additional lintel underneath. Also, while it looks to me fairly obvious that you will need to take out all the bricks that are currently in place to make space put in a new woodburner, you would need professional advice to undertake work like this - especially as you have an extremely heavy broken lintel being held up by the bricks making it risky to fiddle with them. But it's a custom job every time to reinstate a fireplace as it relies a lot on the condition of the chimney, the way that it's constructed etc; so I doubt there will be any reliable advice anyone can give you from a few photos. Get a professional in (perhaps the fire supply co?) to come and look at it for you, inspect the flue, etc. Best of luck....See Morewhat can I do to hide this ugly fire??
Comments (25)Not a lover of the surround either it was plastered over a hideous brick fireplace (long story) and is staying there until we either move(in a few years) or replace the back boiler and get rid of the offending baxi altogether!! Got solid oak flooring I will have to replace that one I scale it down a bit as well...See MoreWorking with an essential but ugly lift in living room
Comments (8)One idea would be to create a focal point with a large picture on the wall opposite the lift to divert attention to the other side. You also could perhaps disguise the lift by using window film/stickers on it, here's an example of the film on a window. It would make the lift appear less utilitarian and you could get quite creative. If you've got children in the house you could get some stickers that they would find fun and could choose how to place them. Imagine it with their favourite animals or super heroes....See Moretamp75
