Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help - Parquet Wooden Floor and Underfloor Heating Kitchen

Hi,

I am doing a kitchen renovation - new boiler included and am deciding on flooring.

I am after herringbone wooden engineered parquet - but I have heard from other friends that it is not a good idea in a kitchen - I was thinking of giving it a matt lacquer but would be keen to know others experiences of it. I dont want to pay a tonne of money for something that won't look good quickly.

Second question is my husband really wants underfloor heating under the wooden floor - we are having a new boiler so were thinking water system, but I think its a waste to have it under wood. Any views?

Hi Emily,

I've linked to a couple of our guides below that might help. Herringbone flooring is gorgeous in kitchens - ours come in a matt lacquered finish too. Wood flooring is also a great material for underfloor heating, creating a warm and comfortable feel underfoot.

We have wet UFH with engineered wood everywhere apart from bathrooms. our house is lovely and warm. You certainly notice the heat underfoot more in the bathrooms where it is tiled, but the actual overall heating effect in the house is great! I wouldnt change it for anything :)

Good evening, They are all ok and really it's just a matter of what your would like to have. Engineered hardwood is of course the most natural and the one that will provide a more luxurious look. Your guests will notice your real wood flooring which generally speaking adds value to the property. Wood looking porcelain tiles, as the name suggests are an imitation of wood flooring and are never available in long planks like 1900mm or more. However, good quality porcelain tiles are durable, maintenance free and will last forever. Vinyl or LVT (luxury vinyl tiles) are again an imitation of the real thing and are very durable and maintenance free but in my opinion a bit cheap looking. hi Julie, This is a relatively common situation in Italy where traditionally, floors are made of either stone or ceramics. In order to fit engineered floors over existing floors, manufactures have developed thin engineered boards 10 or 11mm thick that can be glued straight onto and existing marble floors. the total thickness will be 11mm + 1 or 2mm for the glue for a max thickness of 13mm. Thin boards are available up to 200mm wide 1200 to 2400mm long and once installed look exactly like any other engineered floorboard. No prob for the UFH as 11mm of wood wont stop the heat. Hi Minipie, Great question - you're right to be concerned about the surface temperature being affected when using rugs with engineered flooring and UFH. We would advise against using a rug in this instance, especially a thick rug as the surface temperature will increase in that section and cause a 'heat spot' which may cause issues. If the surface temperature will still remain no higher than 27C then you should be fine but it's hard to guarantee that with a rug. In addition to this, your flooring underneath the rug would be a different colour to the rest of your floor due to lack of sunlight exposure (although this would even out over months). Hi Emily,

Wood flooring in the kitchen is perfectly fine. You can opt for a varnished floor that require no special maintenance apart from adequate cleaning, or an oiled floor that do require regular oiling but that is also easier to repair or re-sand.

underfloor heating is not a problem either and although wood is an excellent insulator (unlike ceramic tiles) the heat from the underfloor heating will make your wood floor warm and comfortable.

However, always remember that with underfloor heating you need to keep en eye on air and floor temperature and air humidity.

Too dry (which is often the case with underfloor heating) and gapping between floorboards can appear. Too humid and the floor may "cup".
