Dimensions of island and clearance space

Beautiful Kitchen. What are the dimensions of the island? And how many inches between sink and island and fridge and island and stove and island for clearance?

The island is 30"W x 120"L. The distance between the sink and island is 39". The refrigerator is mostly facing the passage between the stove and island. The distance between the stove to the island is 45". However, I would recommend 42" between the sink and island and 48" between the stove and island whenever possible.

Which way does the sun come in at times when you'd want to be viewing TV . How many to seat on soft seating . How many to dine ? Extending table? Have you got furniture or are you happy to buy new to suit ? Is there places you can use extra dining chairs around the ground floor or will you need storage for fold up chairs if you have an extending table. What about heating ? Will you have radiators ? As rad covers can double up as serving tables ... As a guide I try to allow about 800mm to 1000mm around the table for chairs - then try and make sure there's walkway space too ... It's a bit flexible if you have chairs that push right in ! But you have to think how you would get past if you needed to and someone was sitting there too !

We have a kitchen similar to your design with the big island and no dining table and find it great - we cook a lot and having a big island that works as a worktop and a table for meals is great, if difficult to keep uncluttered. I would add that we do have a big dining table elsewhere for when we have guests, so you may want to consider if you have space for it elsewhere. Islands also provide with good storage, and you can always put a sideboard or dresser where the armchairs are in that design of you really need more, so wouldn't really go for the design with no island and no table. Never had a peninsula but I can see how it may not be very practical in such a big space. Best of luck!!

Hi Tas! If it was me then I wouldn't continue the kitchen back along that wall and instead create more of a galley kitchen with an island facing towards the back and a bank of full height units against the wall. This would make the rest of the room more useable by keeping the kitchen more compact and with as much storage as you need. In open plan spaces like that I find that one of the things that people find most difficult is deciding where to put the TV! I've had a lot of people come to me after they've had that kind of open plan design, but it doesn't really work for what they want to use it for. Hi. We have a back room similar to this and 3 small kids!! here are my thoughts: kids need space! they have friends over and toys. We have rearranged our layout loads and found it’s very helpful to be Able to be flexible So for this reason I prefer the architects design for the location of the kitchen - as it’s to the side and then you can be flexible with the whole other half of the space.( It will also give you much more scope for a future side extension without redoing the whole kitchen). assuming You have full height storage across the whole back wall behind the door you will be able to contain all the kids toys as well as surplus kitchen bits. I would keep any non-day-to-day Crockery, baking bits etc along this back wall and keep only the everyday kitchen bits along the main kitchen wall. You could maybe keep the boiler in this area also so it doesn’t take up space in the kitchen. i would however switch the dining and seating area putting the dining table at the back (squeeze it even running along the storage wall) and keep the whole area By the garden for a sofa and a play area. You will find with small kids this is the area that is used most. When you’re entertaining you just twist the dining table and extend it running towards the garden. And if you don’t like it you have the flexibility to swap the dining and seating area. (We have been known to swap ours with the seasons! If you like entertaining I highly recommend keeping that run free of an island since the island can’t be moved! Hope this makes sense.
