Advice needed Goal: seamless smooth walls Advice needed please

Goal: seamless smooth walls
Reality: 8 layers of very old wall paper

Should I paint? Should I plaster? Which technique gives me the smoothest surface? Any other tips for dealing this with this type of wall. Please don't suggest wallpaper because I've just spent the time taking eight layers off. ;)

In my opinion it depends on budget.
The best option is to take off the wood cladding and coving and then get a plasterer in.
The budget option is to sugar soap these walls to ensure there is no wallpaper paste residue, then fill and sand any cracks and also use decorators calk to fill cracks in corners and next to woodwork.
Then you need to mist coat the walls which is basically a watered down coat of paint. When that is dry it will need two rollered coats of emulsion (3 if it’s a strong colour). A very flat Matt paint shows imperfections least.
After the first coat of paint check it for any bits that might need more filling.
In conclusion the key to a nice finish on the walls is lots of preparation and then a low/ no sheen paint.

Good morning stroalki. There's no hard and fast "rule" to tiling selections. there simply has to be a certain cohesiveness to it all. Take a look at this bath I just finished. It looks alittle "much" in the pic, but really all works when your in it. So my advice would be get samples of the tile you want to use, and let the Pros here at Houzz helpyou tie it all together. Dear Esther Jury, thank you very much for such a detailed response. First and foremost, we think alike. My deck will definitely be at the same level of my window threshold. Given the practical reasons due to varying ground levels and also not to make it look too, how should I put it, stocky, I am going to have a floating deck. Think Frank Lloyd Wright cantilevered decks like the kind in his Falling Water house (can figure out my adoration for him from my moniker). I have researched thoroughly about woods, composites, value for price and have decided to go with Iroko. It supposedly ages into a beautiful dark brown. Today, my old architect suggested cladding with Iroko for retaining walls and steps. Very interesting idea. Have to explore the durability of the wood for such use. I too love my garden/forest. Can you believe I am 5 minutes from the City centre and I don't see a soul and have fox and their cubs bask in the sun on wintery morning and all types of birds floating about. It fills me with serenity and I am grateful for it and hence why I dwell so long on choices, so I get it right and don't take anything away from its beauty.

Hiya, We are just in the process of completely renovating our downstairs and have gone for pale grey walls (F&B Ammonite) and navy / Inky blue Shaker units (Como from Zoffany) with a white marble look Quartz (Bianco Carrera from Unistone) After a huge amount of indecision, more samples than we knew what do with and a lot of help from our designer, we nervously selected some Seasoned Limestone tiles, which we are using with a wet underfloor heating system. The kitchen isn't finished yet but you can see some pictures of the flooring which has just been laid- the pictures really don't do it justice! It's definitely my favourite bit of the renovation so far, they are great big tiles at random sizes between 60 x 60cm and 60 x 90cm and they really make the room. Whatever flooring you pick I highly recommend you pay lots of attention to the texture; we found a lot of colours looked quite similar but it was the quality of the finish, thickness of the tile, the texture and finish of the edges that made a huge difference to how the stones looked and the quality of the overall feel. As you've chosen Dulux Rock Salt for your walls, I would be inclined to have their satinwood paint mixed in the same colour for your wall units in stead of an off white. An off white is likely to clash with your tiles and worktop. Whereas, if you have your wall units the same colour as your walls, they will tie in and give a more polished, seamless look. If you want you could go for a darker grey on the bottom. Pain the units in Satinwood as it's a longer lasting paint. If you like the Wilko paint colour, get a tester pot and get it mixed and colour matched at Dulux, it will be the right paint then. A dark pewter grey will go with your tiles, worktop and wall units. The ceilings should be matt white. I hope you're taking the opportunity to have a little shift about of the units, the great big Chimney is far too large for the room and needs to come out along with the shelf running round the top. Here you see if you use the light colour on top to match the walls, with the dark on the bottom everything looks light and airy. Good luck.
