paint for north facing lounge

Would love some paint advice.

Formal lounge is roughly 5m x5m and has 2 windows - one north facing , one east (but about 2m from next door property) so is a dark room. It has a wood burner in it, so we envisage using mostly in winter months.

Fireplace around wood burner is white stone with black hearth.

One side of fire place plan to have built in cabinet (painted white?) - other side has window, so either a window seat or a cabinet under window. Thinking of putting in a simple picture rail and painting light colour or shade of white above picture rail and the ceiling. And would like a rich /darker colour on walls.

Have existing light grey sofas (mid century g plan style).

What colours would suit the walls - like idea of dark rich green or blue. Must go with grey sofas as can’t afford to replace them. (Overall trying to create a cosy, but luxe space. Somewhere we can read and watch tv in winter but also good for having drinks with friends in winter if people come over.).

We also have a North facing lounge for which we wanted a warm, cosy feel as we only really use it in the evenings... We painted it Hague Blue and love the result! In the dining room we painted the ceiling Hague Blue too. Our kitchen is Green Smoke which is also a gorgeous colour and may go better with the grey sofas...? There are a couple of other greens I’ve seen and liked too but will have to find the names!

I would post some photos. I have a North East lounge with G plan sofas, but would still want to see photos and know what colours you gravitate towards.

This is my a north facing lounge at present. Picture 1 shows the east facing window, picture 2 is the same window from the far end of the room and picture 3 is the north facing window. Any suggestions are very welcome! No have tried to bring warmth in with the curtains, but the walls just do not work!

i'd choose a pale neutral rather than brilliant white - which could appear quite cold in a north-facing room. a pale neutral will read as 'white' but won't be stark. something like slaked lime (mid or pale perhaps) from little greene. but there's loads of pale neutrals, depends what undertone of any other neutrals in the room has as to which one will work best. and i'd do as you first suggested - the blue in the fireplace alcove and pale the rest of the walls. the dark alcove will be a cosy focal point and be brought forward visually by being a darker colour. rather than a beam of light in an otherwise dark room.

A deep blue will always feel warmer than a pastel or pale blue but it's all relative, a greyed pink could feel warmer than a deep blue, it's complex . Personally, I am really sensitive to light and so I avoid overly dark spaces but I do have a deep wall where my TV is to hide it (Green Smoke). I took colours from this painting and used neutrals, bronzes, browns and wood to create a balance of warm/cool. In terms of lights and darks, I would think about a light floor/rugs if you are going deep on the walls. This is my TV wall. I'm not particularly a fan of 'feature walls' unless there is a purpose to them such as angles that are set back and disguising things such as TVs.

I used Dulux polished pebble for the walls and pure brilliant white for the ceiling in my North facing lounge. Warmed up with mustard wallpaper on one wall and accessories.

I like these kind of looks —- but have no idea if they would work in this room. And confused by all the advice of warm tones and cool tones in the paint!!!
