Adding a bedroom+shower, moving a kitchen - layout conundrum!
Comments (31)Dear all, If you want to add a bathroom, you have to start there and work everything else round it. The reason for this being that you usually have to feed into the existing soil pipe. The soil pipe in this case is on the left hand outside wall. Without knowing if you can put another one on another outside wall ie the rear, which is probably unlikely, you have no option but to place a bathroom as close to the entrance on the left as possible. Obviously you could change the system in the new bathroom to a macerator style toilet, and technology has come a long way with regards those, but they are not for everyone. It may be possible to change the shape of the kitchen, remove the back entrance and push the front wall back, ( maybe not, as i presume it's instrumental in holding up the mezzanine ) If it were possible in theory:- You could - move the kitchen wall back to make more room in the lounge. Add a bathroom with pocket doors ahead of you when you come in and split the lounge down the middle. You could also have a pocket door entrance from the bedroom to the bathroom jack and jill style. That bedroom would also get the balcony....See MoreFitting a shower into low ceiling bathroom
Comments (10)How annoying I wrote a long reply and it didn't post!! Thanks for the replies! Not sure raising the ceiling is an option as it would cost more than we'd gain I think. Interesting to see the different layout ideas. Yes moving the door would mean it would hit the bath. I don't think the hall space would be wide enough for a shower? What do you think? Good to see an idea of how we can reconfigure the toilet sink and bath layout though. I don't think moving the bathroom to the bedroom at the back would be ideal as we'd prefer these rooms to be kept away from the main road. Is it a bad idea to loose a fourth bedroom for a bigger ensuite and bathroom? Is there a way that the fourth bedroom can be reduced in size (but still useable) and making the bathroom (as a minimum) and ensuite bigger?...See Morehelp to decide on bath type please
Comments (14)We re-did our family bathroom last year and have a shower over the bath with a glass screen. We went for quite a simple square ish design of bath - so it gives plenty of room for showering. My only top tip - go for a simple bath screen with the least amount of fittings / hinges and slidey bits because they’re all a pain to clean!!! Our old (and expensive) screen was a sliding one and we could never get to certain bits of it, and within a year or so it looked dreadful. The new one was much cheaper and is a simple screen that folds both in and out. It also has one long hinge / wall attachment - so it’s really easy to clean. A year in and it still looks like new! The other thing we did was to have all the shower fittings concealed in the wall - again makes cleaning easier. And we also ditched the taps and went for a bath filler that is controlled by the shower fitting. Again - we chose everything with a view to be easy to clean!!...See Morenarrow tall ensuite
Comments (10)@keiblem please find below pictures at bottom on what I meant, there is just a gap right now. An ensuite will be very useful. @rinked the chimney is in use. This room is directly above the living room. Am likely to change to a vertical radiator as suggested. @annabellaamy did think about the quadrant design though then will have to rip everything down and not sure if can run the soil pipe easily below the shower? @Lee Lock Do you mean folding screen that runs between the ceiling and the floor between the two ends of the wall currently? @Wumi would prefer not to take out the chimney breast. Interesting idea on the japanese doors. Originally was thinking think narrower french doors such that you would get more clearing room to the bed. I have put in a king size bed in the model so a normal double bed would end up with prob 10cm more room? additional photos of how it looks now...See MoreE D
