Is it comfortable to have wall units above a sink?

We are remodelling the kitchen/diner and trying to get the run of units right!

The 4 m run of units will include integrated washing machine with boiler (ideally all in a tall unit) then a sink, then a range cooker and hopefully there will be some worktop space!

Originally I wanted no wall units at all, as if we were to have a chimney hood above the range it would really only allow space for a couple wall units. I think wall units look much better as a run of same height in-line units.

And thats when I started to look into integrated/canopy style hoods to get that look.

Then what about the sink? We currently have a window at the sink, but that will change and sink will be against a wall. I wouldnt have thought it was a good idea to put wall units above a sink, but see so many pics on houzz that have exactly that!! Or do folk only put a unit above a sink if they are short of storage?

Confused! (and bet you are too after reading this post!)

Hi Ellie. I hope you don't mind me saying but Would It be worth considering hiring karen from OnePlan? I've also got a really tricky space so will do so when we update our kitchen. I've noticed you've created a few posts so I think it could be money worth spending. Just a thought anyway as you really don't get the same designs from the sheds

I think it's ok if they are up high (say 55cm+ off the worktop) but I'm short so that would make them top high for me to reach. If they are quite low then imo it makes it uncomfortable to wash up (We have this at the momen and my husband who washes up hates it).

Your designer has tried to achieve a regular arrangement of the lights in relation to the room. There's often a conflict between what might look most balanced in the space and the most practical positions for lights. You should discuss the options with him/her. We usually position spotlights / downlights just in front of the edge of the countertop, so some of the light goes into the base units. We avoid a light directly over the sink, since you're usually casting a shadow over the sink. Here, the lights over the countertop appear to be very near the wall, perhaps to enliven the wall surface with scallops of light.

We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! Either way - a designer worth their salt will discuss lots of things with you to get the low down on how your kitchen might best work safely, efficiently and to suit you and your family!

Another suggestion for you......adhesive vinyl roll! Specifically, that made by DC Fix. We used a textured metallic finish inside a kitchen cabinet as part of it’s transformation into a bar cabinet. I found it easy to use and very forgiving for repositioning etc. We bought ours from vinyl warehouse but lots of places sell it. If you check out the DC Fix website they have it on bathroom sinks, kitchen cabinets, worktops etc. I’m not sure if they have different levels of quality but I’m sure you could check easily. I just scrubbed an off-cut of ours with the rough side of a bathroom sponge and it didn’t scuff it. Urgh, I had the same thing in my last house and I was forever repainting it! (And that was with a kitchen paint) What was most annoying is that I had wanted a much deeper upstand ie going up under the window cill, and the kitchen designers told me I was basically nuts and that’s not what I should get. I shouldn’t have listened to them. It’s fine elsewhere but the sink (and I didn’t have a bowl in it, ha ha) was a mare! You could get another section of the upstand cut to fit into the space. Or some heavy duty wall paint designed for wet areas. Or subtle mosaics perhaps

Wall units can be useful for extra storage - remember you can alter depth as well as height -so lots of options - depends on your height and others who use the kitchen - and also how much storage you need - sometimes a raised drainer shelf can release worktop space and be worth considering if worktop space is at a premium ( but only if you are tall enough to use it safely !)
