Making the most of an A-frame, lighting

Renovating farm house. We have exposed the beams and A frame all upstairs. Our Aframe sits between 2 bedrooms and landing.
Plan to have central pendant lights in both bedrooms and want to highlight A frame. Friend suggested recessed spots running along Aframe in ceiling. This would mean they would not shine directly on the frame and also they would not shine straight down as they would be recessed into sloping ceiling. Would this work?

I've also responded to your other question about your living room lighting. We also have an a-frame upstairs and have spotlights at what would be ceiling height facing upwards, in pictures. In the bedroom this gives a lovely ambient light and isn't in your face and in the . As with the lighting in your living room I think it's about what you mostly do in the room. For example in a bedroom, you might only need lighting for reading in bed or finding your clothes at the bottom of the wardrobe on a dreary morning. In which case just have bedside lights and maybe spotlights near or in the wardrobe. Most of us live with lighting based around the central ceiling pendant because that was the norm years ago. But you have the opportunity to set the lighting up to suit how you actually use the different spaces. Fantastic looking house by the way!

Sorry got distracted and didn't finish a sentence! I meant to say that in the double height room the spotlights follow the a-frame beams and really make a feature of them in the evening. Then we only have floor and table lamps at ground level to light where needed.

I would put the large chesterfield facing the window (where the grey fabric chair is) and have the fabric chair at an angle in the bay (facing the fire place) with a table next to it. Move the TV from above the fireplace - I think a TV above such a lovely fire detracts from it. You could put it on the opposite wall where the small two seater leather chesterfield is. (Do you need to keep all three seats?) Put a table in front of the fire place so it brings the furniture together, making it a comfortable space rather than a waiting room feel. If you do keep the TV where it is (and keeping all chairs) I would situate the chairs closer around the fireplace as photo show above. And put a free standing unit on the small wall. It really depends on what you want to achieve with your loft conversion. I've shown the stairs where I'm assuming they would work best to give you a masterbedroom suite - so with a walkthrough wardrobe and ensuite, to the back with a dormer extension, and potentially another room to the front with some rooflights. I don't really have enough information to be able to give you any definitive answers on that. This would be based on my assumptions of that kind of house, and the sort of things that most of my clients would ask for. Your house might be different and your needs and desires are unique to you, so are quite likely to vary from my assumptions. I think it's unlikely that you could do that loft conversion and the ground floor and other alterations within your £40k budget though. So that's why I would do it in stages and focus on the ground floor to begin with, because that seems to be the main area that doesn't work. I expect that increasing bedrooms will increase the value of your house a lot in London, so it might well be of interest to you from that perspective, but it might not really have that big of an impact on your life in your home for the short term. It depends on your priorities and what your long term plans are. Personally, if this was my home, then I would spend all of my £40k on the ground floor, use furniture to divide up the front bedroom for the kids, and even install a shower-room to the ground floor where I'm suggesting a loo/utility, and put the washing machine in the kitchen. Then I would get a really good sofa-bed and turn the lounge into a very flexible space that can be quickly and easily turned into a comfortable guest room, then let it on airbnb with guests using the downstairs shower room. That way I would quickly save up the money needed to do the loft conversion so I could have all the works done over a few years. That would be my approach, but airbnb is not for everyone and you may not need to do that to get together the extra money needed to do the loft in a few years time. it depends on your personal financial situation. There is a lot that depends on what you personally need and want, what your priorities are, and what your personal financial situation is. Quite rightly you've not shared all of that on here, and i wouldn't expect you to because a lot of that is private information. I hope this helps within the limitations of what I can suggest based on the information I have!

Thanks Jonathan, I can see how well this design works, however it takes away the garage which we need and we want to try to avoid knocking around the shower room and utility as we want to do as little work (and spend as little of our budget) as possible. We’re trying to see if we can get a decent kitchen/dining are just from the kitchen/living area when it is knocked through.

Yes, thankyou for response on other post. I like wall lights, hubby not so much- says it restricts you if you want to move furniture!
Plus the far end will be used as dining area -hopefully only temporarily! This was why I thought of integrated led strip lights- they are hidden and you just see the beam of light. As I have 2 old oak beams and one pine, only the pine is perfectly straight. The others have curved etc so my concern with running strip flush with beams (1 side only side of fire on each one) was that the beam would be effected by the unevenness of the oak beams. Whether this is a design disaster I do not know and I can’t find pictures of it being done on odd shaped beams.
In relation to this post my electrician suggested spots like you have, my creative friend who has a beautiful house suggested recessed spots as she questioned how I would clean the spots from dust etc. If I went with her idea (and u still got to get to them to change bulbs anyway) I would get ones that were like eyeballs but within the recess so it’s still flush, so rather than the light beams going across they could be directed towards beam. I was concerned of recessed spots as in both rooms the beds will be along those walls. Your spots are not in your face, quite hidden which I like however I would not have a gap/shelf area between wall and ceiling so mine would be more on show. Electrician said to house on wall but I not sure if ceiling would be better?
I have a post in design dilemmas too. I have lifting issues with my spiral staircase. It has a sloped ceiling bathroom on stairs prior to reaching landing. They are enclosed on outside wall. There is a window. Not able to put recessed lights into wall by steps, having carpet so can’t light under tread. Again could use led strip if we put skirting board on otherwise it is wall lights as not enough height or space for pendant. Wall lights also need to be fairly flush as staircase not huge. Did think of long stick sconce but think need more light than 1 (wanted to position on the curve vertically) Thinking up and downlighter on longest wall which is near curve anyway, hubby suggested shorted wall which would be above you as you enter staircase to go up. Yes out of the way but... If you check post I would love your thoughts, pictures are not good.
Thanks re house, hoping we can finalise on lighting then we can work towards getting it habitable

I can't find your post about the spiral staircase and can't quite envisage it. On the sloped ceiling upstairs, if you do choose recessed spots get a really long handled feather duster - that's what we have! Also, opt for LEDs and you won't have to replace them for 10-15 years.
