mix/match countertops with Moroccan floor tiles + ques re cooker hobs

Hi,

We are finally renovating our kitchen and would like some advice please about a) overall colour scheme, b) installing 2 different types of kitchen worktops: granite/slate and wood, and c) positioning of a cooker hob. We are new to renovating and learning on the job! We bought our first house recently and are slowly doing it up.

The kitchen is smallish and J-shaped with no island. There is a separate laundry room which houses the fridge/freezer and washing machine.

COLOUR SCHEME: Our style preference is classical/country cabinetry in neutral shade as we would like to keep the Moroccan style floor tiles we installed when we first moved in (brighten up a 20+ yr old kitchen) see picture included. I prefer the warmer creams/ browns, hubby prefers grey. Either way we would like to accentuate the busy tiles, so any suggestions would be great.

WORKTOPS: We are considering granite/slate worktops (depending on cost) across where the hob and sink will be situated and a dark wooden worktop across the 3rd section. Most of the pictures of mix and match countertops seem to involve and island. Thus would appreciate advice on whether mix and match countertops will work side by side in a smaller kitchen. Also any advice to avoid worktops clashing with floor tiles will be great.

COOKER HOB; given size of kitchen, we are considering positioning the gas cooker hob near/above a water stop tap and will straddle 2 base units. Can we position a gas cooker hob near the mains water valve? I have read anywhere that it’s recommended not to do this, but given my lack of knowledge prefer to ask a ‘simple’ question than make an inaccurate assumption!
Also, design wise the gas cooker hob will straddle 2 base units due to the size of the corner unit - will this look weird?

Sorry for the long message and multiple questions - as it’s our first kitchen renovation I have lots of questions as we plan this out to minimise and ‘oopsies’ later on. I would really appreciate any advice

Hi,

here are a couple of mixed countertops examples. I like your floor.

See if you can take the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling. Looks better, gives more storage space (even if you can only reach it using a stepladder).

The floor doesn't limit you on the cabinet colours. See if you can take door samples home and hold them on the floor (vertically, so it shows the colour as it would be when installed). Do the same with countertop samples. Put them all together and make your choice. Or post photos and ask opinions here, if you can't make a choice at all :-)

A light countertop will reflect more light, make the kitchen seem brighter. You can mix that with a dark wood.

I will see if I can find one of the pro houzzers to look at your dilemma, so they can give you answers to the more technical questions. No promises, but I'll try :-)

Carolina asked me to pop into your thread... I think you and I spoke in the telephone last week ?!
The hob needs to have at the very least 150mm of worktop to the left - ideally 300mm - but if your worktop is a min of 38/40mm thick installing the hob over two cabinets shouldn’t pose a problem. And as long as you can quickly get to the stopcock - that should be ok too. Hope that helps a little.

I agree with dark on bottom, light on top. Not sure about your lifestyle, but refrigerator and freezer drawers are very small. Think about putting a full size fridge with cabinet above and more wall cabinets on the back wall, with some glass doors. Use 90 degree wall & base corner cabinets. Raise the cabinet and countertop at the sink, so your guests have an area to sit at while you cook. I would advise against marble, too much maintainence and too porous, look at quartz, it doesn't scratch, stain, doesn't need to be sealed. A manufacturer to look at is Cambria they have some great matte finishes that look like soapstone & marbles. Silestone is another manufacturer. Another product that I love is Paperstone, although expensive, it is a green product made of recycled paper and petroleum-free resins. It is amazingly durable and hard as a rock and extremely cool! Website: http://www.paperstoneproducts.com/ I would also consider adding a hutch or cabinetry to the right of the space (in the first perspective, on the right is a blank wall). You can use cabinetry to make it look like a piece of furniture, with drawers below and glass doors on top. Have the top cabinets sit on the countertop. I would do it in a light color or cream, black will draw your eye directly to it. You can them add color with decorative items behind the glass doors. I also agree with using drawer base cabinets, like ecomod says, they give you the most storage space and easy access. I would probably nix the mirror idea or hang a large framed mirror, but lighting is really the way to go to brighten that end of the house, recessed cans, interior cabinet lighting where glass doors are used and decorative pendents at the bar. Along with under cabinet lighting. Also paint, if you choose a lively color (even just one wall).

I'm struggling to like a splashback in my new kitchen (even though I chose it) so was looking for inspiration - my partner just doesn't get it and will probably leave me if I even dare to mention changing it :-)

We have Moroccan style tiles which we installed when we first moved in to brighten up the kitchen, and we would like to retain these (picture included). For cost efficiency, we are considering brown or cream (can’t decide colour!) granite worktops across where the hob and sink will be situated and a dark wood across the 3rd worktop (sample plan attached). Most of the pictures of mix and match countertops on houzz/Pinterest etc seem to involve an island Or breakfast bar, neither of which we have enough space for. Thus would like your feedback on: Will differing worktops work or do they appear too disjointed in a smaller kitchen Advice on granite/quartz worktop colours that will work with the floor tiles. also any advice re: colour scheme for walls/splashback/cabinetry hardware/tiles would be appreciated. most of my kitchen toys ie food processor/kettle/toasrer are grey/black, and the hob/oven/microwave are likely to be grey/black so doesn’t really match with a traditional/country style kitchen! Thank you so much everyone for all the comments and ideas! I am definitely swaying towards tiles now or the opaque glass in same colour as wall. Very helpful to see other ideas too with some different style Splashbacks etc. Thanks for taking time to show a design on my photo that’s really helpful. I see what you mean about the shelves needing to be quite small on right hand side of hob. I was thinking of 1 or 2 small ones on that side and longer ones on other side. But yes other option is to have something more decorative on right hand side... but we already have a big brass/black antique style clock for the opposite wall which is a dark grey (see extra pic- but clock not up yet!). Carolina, will check out samples in this way, and most likely post for some help! We are on a limited budget, and are thinking that we are probably going to move in a few years so want to create a wow factor on a small budget that we can enjoy and will keep us in good stead when we sell.
The kitchen has lots of natural light thanks to a large window. when we first purchased the house, there were lots of wall units in dark brown which was great for storage but made the kitchen feel very claustrophobic. Yes agreed on the wall units to the ceiling - I hate the extra space above units!

Karen, yes we spoke last week and I have emailed you separately on the actual design as there are a couple of issues which I am struggling to solve for eg random piping!
