window dressing

Hi houzzers,

Hoping for some advice for how to dress the windows of the master bedroom. We had planned plantation shutters on a track but the pane sizes vary so have been advised against. Back to the drawing board: so it’s a big window approx 6m. We need privacy as you can see into the room easily from the road. Would like blackout,. What would be your preference from;
Curtains-I was worried about weight
Blinds-maximum width?!
Shutters-any other options to the shutter solutions?

I’m interested in ease of opening and closing; should we motorise? Any company recommendations?

Thanks Carolina; I realise I don’t have a good photo from the interior but have added exterior here so that you can see the size of the space. I’ve also added a pic of the interior as it stands at the moment; windows on the left of this picture.

I still think blinds at the bay window would look better, you can use a thick fabric and have a thick lining put in as well. I'm not so sure that hanging curtains from the crown detail would look right above the door.... I'd be more inclined to go from the picture rail height..... just personal opinion! Also, what colour are you thinking of doing the walls and are the window coverings likely to be heavy patterned or plainer textured fabric? Just thinking that if the walls were say a beige then a darker shade for the window coverings with a slight pattern or texture it would be less obvious that the windows were different heights, your eye wouldn't be drawn to it so much as a heavy pattern.

Hi, take a look at these photos which show similar rooms to yours. It appears that your windows are close to the street so you may want to consider bottom up blinds to give you privacy without blocking the light (see below). These wood venetian blinds we installed show how you can control the light and your privacy too. They look similar to shutters, but take up less space, allow more light in and cost much less! I think some beautiful white voile for the day time, mounted on a very discreet ceiling mounted track, such as Silentgliss, which can be bent into the bay. I would then put a bay pole in front of this with whichever curtains go with your scheme, using a blackout lining. I would be careful not to have the curtains gathered too full though as you do not have a lot of space to the left of the window to pull them back. Although unconventional, to overcome this problem, you might want to consider having the curtains made to different widths, ie a shorter left curtain and a wider right curtain so that when they are closed they meet at the corner. On a flat window this would be very conspicuous, but your window is unusual.

If you have wall lights on the pillars then you wouldn't be able to have one long pole, but I think that would look best and the most minimalist solution vs 3 separate poles. You can also get blinds fitted to the recesses of the door which can look really good as they're not noticeable when closed

Hi Tracey, I think 3 blackout blinds would work well.

Thanks Kathy-would you recommend standard roller blinds? Do you get light seepage in the gaps between the blinds? How should I install? Pelmet over the top?

Hi Tracey, we would also suggest 3 blackout roller blinds. You would get some light seepage around the sides and in the gaps between the blinds. This could be eliminated if you went with side tracks. These are 'channels' in which the blinds sit so there is no space at the sides of the blinds (see pic). You could also have a cassette at the top of the blind which also eliminates any light seepage.
