surface mounted led down lights dilemma

Unfortunately we can't have normal LED downlights in our new kitchen diner. Our only option is to have surface mounted LED downlights. There are two options to either have wide ones which are about 22cm in width and 36mm in depth. These look very wide. Or to have other option which is 80mm in width and 80mm in depth. These really stick out!
We need a total of 9 over our kitchen. The diner will have a pendant and lamps. All first fix of electrics done so we can't change this now.
Can anyone shed any light please. Thank you

You can get ultra thin LED under cabinet lighting so I would keep looking if I were you

Hi Emily, I agree they do stick out quite a bit I have to admit! Have you thought of alternative lighting options such as Track Light? They don't look so obvious and you can alter the direction.

LED is best from the top down if you can - as a few points of your looking through the glass down ward you will see the led strip little points - if on top of glass it you would most likely not see the hot point of light. The glass should most likely be coloured but a pastel colour or white using low iron glass as it will allow light to travel better. Lastly textured glass works better as it allows the light to hit a design and the effect is better (but i make textured splashbacks) Use low low glass paints a colour with top light led - that you can easily access if light goes or transformer etc. They will say it has a 10 year life span but I have seen many break and you will want to replace easy without taking your kitchen apart

Hi Charlie, Recessed down-lights could work, just go for something that's adjustable so you could angle the lights. These Philips ones could come in handy. They have a contemporary and practical design. Philips 3 Pack of EcoHalo Recessed Downlights - White Or you could go for few single spotlights, this will give you more flexibility with directing the light and is a great alternative for bar lights / track lights. They are also quite compact in size. 1 Light Cylinder Ceiling or Wall Spotlight - Black Or you could use down-lighters to light the main wall creating an unusual and welcoming look... Latest advice appreciated on the best big induction downdraught hobs please (Berbel, Bora, Gaggenau, Siemens, Bosch or others). We want best steam and fat clearance rates, quietest motors, easy-clean (unsure re self-clean, ducted or recirulated air). Berbel's FaceBook page features lots of customer complaints regarding after-sales service and spare parts, but some seem due to Covid delays which we think is unavoidable; another mentions guests sitting "in a haze" from the recirculated air and obviously nobody wants that! We need to order very soon but definitely don't want ceiling extraction. Many thanks for prompt replies!

JC We have around 26 GU10 down lights in our open plan kitchen diner. We have just swapped the kitchen area over to LEDs in new white coloured down lights which look a little less obtrusive. We went for 3000k (warm white - but not too yellow) 6w LED bulbs in those. We got both the down lights and bulbs from https://ledlam.co.uk/. We chose their bulbs because along with being a good price, the cover on the face is just milky white and when the light is off you can't perceive any of the yellow light cells inside, which we found in some of those from Amazon. They do three colours of light, warm white, day white and cool white, so perhaps the day white would suit you better The dining area we're keeping as halogen GU10s on a dimmer because we prefer the warmer, softer colour of the halogens. We also have a pair of table lamps on the sideboard and 2 wall lights in that bit. We have a wall light in the kitchen - along with dimmable in-cupboard lighting in the glass fronted wall cabinets and dimmable under cupboard lighting. So, we can have as much or as little light as the occasion requires, but it is most important to have the option of good task lighting in the kitchen I think.

I would go for ones which can be angled, individual rather than on a track. Then it will look as if you chose them on purpose. Or maybe a mix of fixed (the long 80mm wide ones) and angleable, eg you could have the fixed ones over your main wall run and angleable over other parts of the kitchen.

I have seen those long 80mm ones in black in a kitchen on Houzz or maybe Pinterest, they looked very good actually as they picked up black accents in the rest of the kitchen. So depending on your kitchen style you could consider this effect, make a feature of them.

I would definitely not pick the flat ones, they look like hospital or bathroom lighting to me...
