Need help on style of porch and front door!
Comments (103)Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly......See MoreImprove appearance of Edwardian 3 storey semi
Comments (5)This is a lovely house, I would recommend trying to keep as much of the original design as possible. The pillar appears from the photo to be the original timber and the door also appears to be original. I would keep both. We have an Edwardian house and after extensive research I discovered fascias/soffits and timber on Edwardian properties were painted a bright white. We changed ours from black to white (wevet farrow and ball) and it transformed the house. We also repointed all the brickwork but I would only do this if it is really necessary. I would paint the render (definitely not render the whole house) either white or a light grey. The neighbour appears to have white so it may be more harmonious to do the same. If you went for light grey take a look at ammonite f&b. Re gravel I'm not a fan of bonded gravel (if its what I'm thinking of-the resin type gravel) but I do like gravel driveways and again this is what we selected. Bonded gravel seems quite a harsh look to me. Re changing the bay window to a flat roof I would not do this unless it was originally like that. Re windows I would change them back to timber windows to the original proportions and profiles, all painted white. Observe neighbouring properties to see what they've got/done. Finally a few nicely placed plant pots and your home will look beautiful. Hope that helps!...See MoreHelp, what colour front door for improved curb appeal ??
Comments (20)Thank you Celerygirl and everyone else. I think I have made my decision now for now. Black !!! I am going to have the door frames, sidelights and door in Black and centralised, the brick work extended at the top of the frame and a roof light installed in the roof. Its exactly what I didn't think I wanted but what sits right with me. Many thanks for all of your help I will update you all with the result in November when we are due to carry out the work....See MoreImproving appearance of house exterior
Comments (15)Hi :-) I'm blushing, because of Karen from OnePlan's comment :-) But here goes: fairly simple and I'm guessing not too expensive would be changing the front door for a modern (oak) one, adding a modern awning above the front door, and painting the pebble dash a warm white, improving the path to the front door and painting the red brick retaining wall a dark grey (same as stairs) or white. I would also add planting. At some point in the future I'd change the trellis below the decking for a more modern version with vertical or horizontal slats and replace the railing with a glass version or a metal version (but I'm not sure if that is allowed by building regulations in the UK because of the horizontal steel wires)....See Morelewade
