bedroom laminate - white or dark?

Originally wanted to paint our master bedroom’s floorboards white but decided to get laminate instead for durability and timescale.

However, I can’t decide between white laminate or a richer, darker floor.

Which would you go for if you planned on having either dark walls or pale walls and dark ceiling and mostly either monochrome or tropical theme?? Not decided yet which way to go with the room and might even have a velvet blue bed in there so ....

Would white go with everything or is a darker floor more neutral?

I know white would show up less dust, ha ha.

I vote light...
I like moody decorating. I would have a light floor and a light ceiling. I would then put a pale-ish colour around the walls and the sloping ceilings- I like Purbeck stone or any pale grey.
I would then paint a warm colour such as Salon Drab or Tanners Brown behind the bed and the wall next to it.
I would then add soft furnishings that continue the theme, are patterned, and include navy.
As a further accent you could add mustard.
I would continue the grey and brown theme in the ensuite too.

Hi there. I have had both floors you are choosing and I did them myself. In my lounge I had wooden floorboards painted white but as you put on the many layers of floor varnish, they mute to a less stark light cream. Slung a rug over and worked very nicely in a bright room. Does the room get lots of natural light? If so then this will work well. I have all dark wood flooring now and I love it. So easy to clean. Dust bunnies do accumulate in corners so get a static dry mop - really quick clean up compared to hoover. The darker floor looks smarter in lower lit areas and will not be bleached by direct sunlight. Good luck with whatever you choose x

Hello,

The room had a south facing window so should get plenty of light.
I’m just not sure which colour floor would work with darker walls if I ever decided to paint them, ha ha. I know I could add a rug over the laminate anyway so it’s just deciding if white is better as a base colour (add rugs on to suit) or if the dark is more elegant. Seen a nice teak one although that might be too dark ...

Love Jen's idea of the Industrial feel - How about a warm brick effect wallpaper behind the bed?? Clips lamps for the bedside wall too - Ikea have a good range and of course, if you don't already have the cables chased in to the wall, you won't need to with that type. You may be struggling with the curtains as i'm not sure you've got room for the pole to stick out where it meets the wardrobe, maybe perfect fit blinds would be better. You could go for a warm brown to warm the room up, coupled with a chocolate brown Sheepskin rug as suggested by Jen also, it would start to look cosier.

Hi everyone, thank you for all the comments and advice. We have decided to go for it! Must admit we bith said ok, lets jut do grey and whites.. but I see farrow and ball paint Stifkey blue and just couldn't get the original idea out of my head! Family think we're crazy.. but I don't mind. And if it does look small, who cares! It's our bedroom! orderEd some new flooring, wood effect wallpaper (for one window wall) and furniture! Bit of a wait on furniture- 4 weeks.. but soon as it's all done I will post pictures! Thanks everyone for giving me the confidence to do it! just have to order some curtains etc now- although thinking pale cream wooden blinds??

Good question S L, it is hard to take a good picture of white wooden shutters as an amateur photographer, but hopefully you can pick up the detail in these 2 photographs of the other side of the room. We used The Cambridge Shutter Company for the warm white traditional shutters. Rebecca, the owner, is so helpful and knowledgable. A white floor is more Boho California and a dark one is more English. It depends where you want to wake up on a sunny morning.

I tell you why I voted white: I think it'll be more dramatic with dark walls. And should you want to go for a more Scandinavian vibe, it will also work with lighter walls. Whereas dark floor and white walls could be a bit boring. White floor is much more unexpected.

Looks like white is a clear winner then! Fab. Ordered some samples in as can't fit it until end of next week when the plaster is completely dry.

@Jonathan - when you say to paint the walls in a light grey but then paint the bed wall and the one next to it a darker colour... do you mean just the lower half or ceilings as well?

My room is sectioned off and where the bed goes, the walls curve into the high walls and over - then recess up to a flat ceiling. So I have the curved walls then a rebated section then the flat ceiling (if that makes sense) - see the original photo below which shows a section of it better above the stairs. We have an en-suite to the left of that now but you can see how the ceiling rebates in.

A bit late to the game, but I vote for dark floor over the white. (I actually prefer the mid to dark wood you have in your idea book, but you’ve obviously ruled that out). The reason I say dark floor is because of one of the moody bedroom pictures in your idea book and also because I think you might need a rug underfoot, and I can see a lighter rug over a dark floor looking better with dark walls.

I would put the dark color in the ceiling slope above your bed too.
I still vote for a light floor as your windows are not as big as the ones in the inspiration photos so to reflect some light I think that you need pale horizontal surfaces to balance out deep colours on the wall.

I have checked the room very late afternoon whilst the plaster is still drying and it does seem quite dark up there compared to when the plasterboard was just up in the day time (where it seemed very light)

I think if I just painted the area around the bed dark and kept to white on the floor and around the dressing table area and bathroom walls then it might still feel cosy but not depressing.

We don't spend time in the bedroom in the day anyway so I guess it's how it feels first thing and last thing at night that is important.

@Jonathan - I don't really like brown tones in paint personally - so are there any other colours you would recommend on the more blue/grey deep coloured walls?

On their colour card it almost looks like black, with a deep blue undertone. I like the photo that one of the pros posted on your other bedroom thread, with the top half painted dark and the bottom half light. Daring, but it looked very effective.

Just went back to check on that and can see which one you mean now. That could work if I had the bottom half in white much lower than the top darker curve ie so you don’t notice as much how un-level the walls are, ha ha.

(They are off because the one side was pushed back further into the eaves so the sparks of the roof look like one is longer than the other. I hate it mismatching but would have cost too much to rectify)

Seems to be that the ‘white’ laminate is either more a creamy tone or a grey tone! Ordered samples in and went to the usual b&q to find some and all are either quite shabby or lean one way colour wise (grey or cream!)

The oak effect one is off white but with v v pale grey (supposed to be just white) but it’s the nicest one I’ve seen so far. Solid painted white effect is going to be quadruple the price. Boo.

Even one that was called ‘brilliant white’ was cream! LOL

So my question re my above comments is really, would the white flooring that has a grey tinge still work ok??

Just looked at their website, and of course the most expensive option looked the best to me. LVT though, not laminate.
Of the laminate, the Bannerton white oak looked good to me.

Yes the LVT is nice but would need to board over all the floorboards and it's way out of my price bracket for the bedroom, haha.

The floor I found online is similar to the bannerton but a bit cheaper (it's in the sale) but has a 25yr guarantee so should be fairly durable. It looks the same ie with a bit of the grain showing through.

Was hoping for something brighter and whiter but I haven't got weeks to buy in loads more samples as need to fit it next weekend, haha

It never even occurred to me to use vinyl @ Jonathan! Ha ha. Might have been been quite nice and soft underfoot.

Ive ordered it now as got to do it this weekend so couldn’t wait. It looks similar to that vinyl though ie a white oak effect. Slight grey tinge but the back is whiter than the all white board so I think it should work with blues and greys and other colours :0)

For me, dark walls light floor and vice versa, on another discussion I did say I’ve most of my house white but I do love a dramatic dark room to, only problem is I’ve that many tress around me the rooms I’d love dark are dim even with white paint!
