SHOW AND TELL: Your best bargain buy!
Comments (14)I can't do pics as my house is a mess but I have bought beautiful things from ebay and local forums for silly money. We got a huge L-shaped velvet covered sofa from Restoration Hardware for £300 inc delivery (near perfect condition and would have cost over $5k new), a huge solid wood apothecary coffee table also in perfect condition for £75, an occasional chair from Crate & Barrel (also perfect) for £90. Literally thousands of pounds of furniture for less than £500. I look carefully for things that are poorly photographed or ill-described as these often get overlooked. However, recently I was helping my in-laws sell some of their furniture as they were downsizing and I couldn't believe how hard it was to sell. They had bought everything 10-15 years ago from Harrods (eek!) and it was all in perfect condition and extremely well made, and in the end we were selling things for prices similar to the above which seemed such a shame. One other tip is to look at the sofa.com microsite on ebay - they have great things at very good discounts and they are available immediately....See MoreLayout suggestions for our seaside cottage?
Comments (15)Thanks Kate. I was very against having the kitchen leading into the bathroom. Unifying the living/dining/kitchen meant we could overlap the spaces and also gain on better sight lines. Loosing the chimney wasnt overly expensive but what you gain on floorspace made up for it. Dont forget you also gain space in the rear bedroom so furniture is easier to place up their too. The central wall was a spine wall so we put in a steel envelope. We also supported the chimney in the roof space, again with steels. All building control approved. There is no door on the stairs - i also glazed the spindles to allow light through and ran up a stair-rope, giving the coastal feel. Attaching some more pics/plans. The cottage is still snug. Good luck Kate!...See MoreIntelligent Lighting for All - Some Tips from Our Recent Newsletter
Comments (0)Intelligent lighting was something we saw to be very popular last year, and for very good reason! As it becomes more mainstream and affordable we foresee most renovation projects employing an element of control in primary living spaces! But, as choice grows, which system should you choose? Here are some suggestions from our lighting team at Avinu: Controller compatibility and light fittings : LEDS should be tested before you buy. How many circuits? Consider a small controller for main living areas, or whole-house to reap the full benefits of a larger dedicated system. Have you cabled? If you have a retro-fit then there are great wireless controllers. However, cabling is best! Flexibility : wire for both traditional and intelligent systems where you can. Power Saving : don't forget to include occupancy sensors for turning lights off when rooms are vacated....See MoreCloakroom tile beading off white or off black?
Comments (25)I actually painted the beading in brilliant white (like the walls) gloss, but over time it yellowed. Annoyingly the same has happened to my other woodwork, doorposts etc in bathroom and toilet, as a result of lack of natural light....See MoreOTM Designs & Remodeling Inc.
