ideas needed please for a 1970s project!

Hey guys just in the process of completing on what we hope will be our forever family home. It took some convincing the Mrs as she wasn’t convinced from the outside but there is lots of potential but I could really do with some help on what to do with the outside, initially the front! I’ve seen other threads where they've rendered and if anyone could show us what that could look like that would be great, also possibly extending the right hand side maybe? Who knows?! Hopefully you can come up with some great ideas :)

Comments (33)Just another opinion...I like the suggestion that others posted to remove the bush and if possible, to put entry door in it's place, to remove the post and replace it with a support beam and brackets, replace garage door, add low wall to separate your driveway from the neighbor's, plant a dwarf tree in the front yard along with some edging plants... But with so many possibilities to choose from, perhaps you could accomplish your desire to make your home stand out from the others inexpensively by...painting over the white part of the house, the downspout directly above the canopy and the garage door to match the lightest brick color. Choose the darkest brick color for all of the other trim and windows. Patch and seal the driveway to freshen it (until you know if you will be permitted to do anything more permanent), definitely taking out the bush and doing some low cost planting just to add some color. It takes time to settle on your needs, style, budget, etc. But it's worthwhile to spend a little cash and effort to get a bit of satisfaction that things are looking better!...See More1970s farm bungalow renovation

We plan to go into the roof, although we may run out of money before then! Comments (11)I do like the house Carolina found. I too had come across it during my research and it was one of my favourites. I’m not sure about the wood, however. It looks lovely new, but I suspect won’t weather too well. I 100% agree with ’E D’ - either subtle or extreme changes. When we first moved in we had quotes for a garage conversion... until we parked our car outside, under the tree... the birds use it as target practice so we use the garage. My plan had been to hire internal and external architects such that we had a plan for the whole house that would all tie together, even if we only worked on small components of the project at a time. Then the windows priority and COVID has rather thrown me! I had wanted to hire Back to Front Exteriors, but they are booked until spring, but could offer a couple of hours consultation once we have the internal architecture complete. I have spoken to RESI (online architects), but I get the feeling that to get the most out of them you have to have very formed requirements... something I don’t have. I’m more of a data person than a creative person, so I thought reaching out to the hive-mind collective may help! (If I can’t decide on window type, colour or opening placements it’s what hope is there!!!) Looking at Back to Front Exteriors I like the below from a concept perspective - an extension with a wider base than first floor. It would allow for a long window in the flat roof. The people before us converted the conservatory into a ground floor extension... but it isn’t really working for us; we use it as a dumping ground. I wouldn’t be adverse to sacrificing some of the dining room to make a better kitchen-family area (an island would be a dream, and anything that could make a north facing kitchen brighter would be welcome). Also, if the extension was pushed further along too I wouldn’t mind, as long as the dining room still retained a window. I have to be realistic - I only have a small garden and wouldn’t want a monstrosity extension. All I want is to make the house work better for us. Would you do the side double timber gates in the same colour as the front door or match them instead with the oak window frames? Colourhappy - yes the house design is that way. Its ok to say it 🙂. 5 years agoI think I would be talking to the architect about a front extension to give you a front facing gable, moving the front door to the front and replacing the current box dormer with two smaller dormer windows.

5 years agoIf you are not going to extend it, could you put the entrance door at the front where the small window is now? If the garage door and entrance were one large visual slab like the bottom image that would make it look much more modern. Also, brick looks really good with black so cladding the upper window and replacing the windows with a dark colour such as the image below, may be worth considering.
