Advice - ensure blinds/curtains/shutters

Hi!

I am not sure what type of blinds/curtains to choose for my 3 bedroom house.

1. There is a rectangular bay window in the kitchen in the ground floor - I think I will choose white shutters to have light and privacy.

2. For the master bedroom - I think I will also go for the white shutters.

Both windows above are facing front of the house.

At the back of the house I have two extra small bedrooms. One of them I will use as a walk in wardrobe + desk + etc, the other one would be as a guest room. What do you recommend? For the guest room should be a solution that does not allow light in the room early in the mornings. Would a white wood blind look nice? A black-out roller blind on its own? A black out roller plus curtain?

I also need to think about the windows in the leaving room which face the back garden, but I will leave this for a later.

I agree with Jenny. Blinds with curtains would give the functionality + aesthetics.

You maybe surprised that shutters are not as expensive as some perceive. Shutters be purchased on line where you are required to measure and install yourself. Shutters can be very unforgiving if measured incorrectly. Need any advise? Just ask London Interior Shutters, happy to advise.

I want to make roman blinds out of curtains to match a blind.

For my first roman blind I used a roman blind kit from Dunelm, worked out great. I then used those instructions to go on to make a further 12 (never buy a house with 5 sided bay windows!) and purchased the bits needed from terrysfabrics as mentioned by Catherine Byrne. They are really straightforward. The key is to take your time with your measurements/calculations and with ensuring your edges and rod pockets are straight.

Hi Diana, Whenever I specify Roman Blinds I recess them into the window and put dress curtains on each side (not functioning, purely for show and to soften the look) The issue I have is that the failure rate on Romans is very high, the pull string mechanism is very delicate and can jam up after regular use. Given the choice I would not specify them. My preferred solution is to inset plantation shutters into each window and then dress the outside with a simple pair of dress curtains each side or a modern swag over the head. I have done this on traditional interiors and ultra modern and they always look good. I never have any ongoing issues and the light quality the blades give is wonderful. (I prefer a large blade and avoid the central pole in favour of a hidden mechanism.) Another interesting feature of plantation shutters is that in the evening you push the shutters up for privacy and this deflects the heat back into the room, it saves a lot of money !! Hi Lucy, Have you considered roller blinds on the french doors like the photo below? We installed these sunscreen roller blinds on the actual doors as they open inwards too. When fitting blinds to french doors, you need to make sure that the blinds clear the door handle and the hinges. Here is another example of sunscreen roller blinds we installed to the actual french doors. Woods blinds with roller

another suggestion if you feel that adding a curtain may take up too much space. Wooden blinds and a darker toned roller blind if you wish to make your room shut out the light completely from the room, and make it double up as a guest room

One thing to bare in mind is that the price of shutters can be quite high so if you are looking to save some money, consider blinds for your kitchen and master bedroom windows. White wood venetian blinds can achieve a similar effect to shutters.

If you are looking to create privacy without blocking all the light, you may wish to consider sunscreen roller blinds.

For bedrooms, we would recommend blackout roller blinds to block the light effectively. You can always team them with curtains for a softer look.
