Good Morning,

I am a maker of metal and glass doors and screens, Recently I have received a number of calls regarding fire rated doors. Does anyone have any advice for me regarding the steps of creating a fire rated product?

Hi, i think you need to contact the glass makers. Some companies provide fire resistant glass depending on your needs and specifications: https://www.pilkington.com/en-gb/uk/products/product-categories/fire-protection

You need to speak to Pyroguard glass they will give you specifications or point you in the right direction to do this. It’s an expensive procedure though. They have around 2,000 options.

Thanks Minnie and Jen. Sorry that I was not clearer in my initial post. We are knocking through the wall between current front room and kitchen as well as the wall/internal window between current kitchen and living room. The garden is west facing and front room east facing. Our issue is that having seen some of the neighbour did the above, somehow the middle room still feels a bit claustrophobic and dark and so is the corridor. This is why we are scratching our head to come up with design to mitigate it. Our initial plan is option B with Crittall glass screen and single pocket door. See proposed floorplan

Ok so this may sound stupid and I have no idea if it can be achieved, I am sure a lot of tradesmen on here would laugh but I’m trying to think outside of the box for a shoestring budget. So I’m a major fan of ikea hacks, you can customise furniture for so little money and you really can be quite creative. As for faking Crittall Windows........ providing this is for internal aesthetics only I would love someone to experiment with this idea in a man cave. Use the black powder coated aluminium pax wardrobe frame from ikea and get a glazier to cut the glass to required size using the ikea inserts as a template. Obviously your door widths would have to be increased but this could work against stud partitions in large apartments to separate areas of space maybe? U can all laugh at me now!

Hi Andrei, From a circulation view point I think you would naturally enter the room and form an arc to the right to the kitchen arriving at the kitchen island so the dining table would be best on the right I feel. A fire on the left where the vase is would look good visually as you walk in and less cluttered along that wall. If the island is movable I would suggest moving it to the right, closer to the sink and hob to allow a line of site from the sofa to the garden though the French doors. Perhaps a square coffee table tucked in close to the right angle of the sofa would be best for circulation and a bigger rug anchored by the legs of the sofa, perhaps curved on its outer edge to echo a round table?

Hi will, We are frameless glass door mfrs, we have a number of enquiries for both fire rated doors and also black crittal effect doors - do you supply to trade?

I think another thing you will need to look into is intumescent strips which swell up in heat to create more of a seal in the event of fire.
