Exteriors Renovating Design Dilemma

Driveway conundrum

We'd like to extend our house so that we use the current garage and car port on the left, and then move the garage to the right and put in a diagonal driveway. Is our front garden too small do you think? And does it matter that a car couldn't be manouverd into the garage?

Is the extension going to be a single or two storey? ie will the fact your neighbour having a window on the side be an issue if it's double storey for light issues?

If not then I don't see why having a diagonal driveway should be an issue. Ideally you would get the kerb lowered on the right side but it's quite expensive to do this.

Surely cheaper to put the extension on the right and leave the garage where it is? That way you don't lose your front garden. You will probably also be required to put in drainage for a new drive to comply with SUDS.

Hello. Do you have a good idea of how the house looked originally? Do any others in your road still have original features? As an architecture bore, I think your house is a lovely period piece, albeit with newer windows (I'm all for good insulating windows but I've never quite got over old buildings with modern windows!), so I'd look to its original features for inspiration. You can then decide what's going to be necessary for you to live there in the 21st century and get the best of both worlds. From your photo I love the red flowers. Together with the red brick and pale housepaint to me it presents a cheerful aspect to the world. Lauren's mock up is great - painting the tiles red really brings everything together.

Hi everyone thank you all so much for your comments. The front of the house is north facing. I am really open to any idea (sketches on back of a napkin would be more than adequate!) that involves making the back of the house a two story kitchen/living/eating/bedroom arrangement as that will get the most sun (it’s just a shame the view is the other side of the house). I am really interested in making it eco friendly and am open to new and exciting materials (even a living wall!) . The access to the back is via the arch in the photos. The floor plan you see is the existing house (other photos are out buildings) but I suppose what I am thinking of doing is make the back into “the front” as this will be the bit that will be most used and that people see when they come to the house. Ideally I’d like 5/6 bedrooms. Keen on bathrooms that are out of the way but not en suites. Want separate dining room to kitchen. Wider than regs staircase. Would like a good sizeable utility room for coats boots washing machine etc. A playroom area would be good. Other than that I would like to do something really unique - weird and wacky is the name of the game! Put a slide in if you wish! And I’d love an outdoor bathroom please! Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be 120cm and if so why ? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table (because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise). I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room (with the pantry taken out) and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window? (and still have space for an island) I know this goes against some of my earlier points, especially about being worried people would be able to look in at us/and would create a more goldfish bowl feeling but I am just playing around with ideas.

These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire.

Sorry I may have misunderstood, if your new garage isn’t actually going to be used for the car, then do you need to move the driveway? Wouldn’t the car be fine parked on the drive in front of the new extension? You could just extend the path across the width of the house or on the right hand side for garage access.
