Should I paint this 250 year old oak beam?
Comments (47)Karin, thanks for your suggestion . The bricks surrounding the fireplace and forming the canopy are over 200 years old and each one is handmade. Although you can't see from the picture, each one is unique with different shading, sizing and surface markings. This style is very traditional in the part of France where we live. Where we can, we are trying to restore and retain the original features of the house. If we painted the bricks we would destroy something that took a craftsman almost a month to restore . The bricks had been cemented over at some point in the last 50 years and we rediscovered them when we restored the fireplace . Many of the original bricks couldnt be saved so we toured salvage yards to find authentic replacements. The entire house is over 250 years old so each room and every feature in each room has a different story to tell. The roofing timbers for example came from the hull of a ship and date from about 1700. When the ship was no longer in use the timbers were salvaged for the roof. How they got them here is a mystery. We are 150 km from the sea. That's a long journey by horse and cart....See MoreGround floor rear extension

Comments (20)totally agree with you. love original features. if the window is original in the bathroom then you've done a great job showing it off as it wasn't noticeable before. Love the bay too. so did they use the original glass or did they just replica the design? my own house is an old house unfortunately it was used as part business before so has lost a lot of features. over the next year we will be putting up an extension to replace one that had been added and will try and start sourcing some original items to put back Into the house. will think it will be a challenge at times but looking forward to it....See Moreanother awful conservatory. Comments (21)Hi Alison, we kept the same footprint and replaced the frames/windows/roof - went from polycarbonate roof to energy efficient glass and had a pelmet with down lighters added. It’s definitely helped enormously with the huge temperature extremes that we used to experience and it’s lovely to sit and look up at the sky. Haven’t experienced high summer yet but I’m sure that I’ll be out buying some roof blinds at some point. I had two threads on here, one about the outside, one about the inside decor if you want to have a read. Good luck with your decision.
