Calling all interior genius

i need help i couldn't tie a room together if my life depended on it.

so i bought a corner sofa in a slate colour see the This is my sofa (you may need to select the slate colour also mine is the other orientation)

there is rough layout of my room, bacily i need advice and guidance on wall colours floor colours

the floor is going to be tiled (wood effect but colour not picked) with underfloor heating

any hints tips advice suggestions will be meet with outrage gratitude

I think you may struggle a little with the sofa................it is quite large for the room and difficult to place. In fact there's only really one place you can put it and that's far right. You then need to fit in the T.V and whatever you do, part of the sofa isn't facing the focal points, the T.V and Fireplace. I can't find the exact sofa, but the one used is the actual size of yours.

You would be better off with smaller rooms to have one 2/3 seater sofa facing the focal point and an armchair or two. It give you more space and makes the furniture easier to place.

I agree with MATH that this is a big sofa for this room. Assuming it is not a second hand bargain that you can’t ignore can you change the order? I think I might get a sofa and footstool that gives the feeling of a chaise but can be an extra seat when needed. I might also choose a lighter colour which will help it seem like it is taking up less space.

As far as colour you sound like you are doing ok. Brown and grey is a nice combination. I would continue this with pale grey walls, white woodwork, and then you need to add a little colour and a little pattern. That’s what the soft furnishings do- the safest and easiest way to do this is to buy plain curtains a patterned rug and cushions that include an extra colour- pretty much every colour will work so choose one you like- I like mustard with the grey and brown.

The NewYork apartment in the movie 'Down With Love' is my personal favourite. Sunken, circular longe, lofty spiralling staircase and that view! I'd change up the colour scheme, a bit too pink for my tastes. Or even it out by spending time at the equally stunning, James Bond-esque bachelor pad, with its wood tones and blue velvet goodness. Voted for Floral but all of the styles are beautiful in different ways. I imagine floral style that comes with a cosy living room with lots of soft furnishings and a granite fireplace to gather around to.

Hello Lisamarie, Thank you very much! Well look at it like this, I offer up ideas I would do or consider but then you need to see what works for you and what you like, in my suggestions.. My advice is never impartial though as I am far too invested in what I do and love.. You do need to consider the furniture though but despite all these ideas your bright cushions will still add a really nice contrast.. What I was thinking, because I have this same experience... I painted the chimney breast only in grey.. I then painted the walls a cream colour, skirting in white. In your case it would be Wimborne for the walls and All White for the woodwork... ... I lived with it for a while but felt bored. It wasn't dramatic or characterful.. .. So I went on to paint the left wall where the window is and the opposite wall.. So 3 sides will now have dark grey 1 of the walls has an 8 ft by 6 ft mirror though the other is the chimney breast and the alcoves will be papered Oreste charcoal by Zoffany.. When I have got around to paying my pro-forma! ;) ..... (It's going to be a dark interior for the living room).. So I then painted all the window frames and windows black against the window panes and again a purple/grey colour I made for the frames, skirting, picture rail and architrave. It is coming along but not finished.. I have very little £ so I have to do things when I can.. Why not get some A4 paper and a few sample pots of nice chalky whites and creams, I do like pointing, also Shaded White and Clunch are really gr8 ... Stick some on the wall and some of the skirting colour on the skirting... You want to butt them up close together, so you can see them together... Look throughout the day at the changes. Duplicate the wall colours at eye level too.. so you can see at more height.. The room will look like a bad shave day! : ) ) Colours will change depending on the light.. choose a colour that is just a little creamier, so that if you want the woodwork white... you can still get a contrast.. Otherwise it will be white wall and woodwork and a downpipe chimney breast... So let's just say you went with some contrast... For Downpipe you could have Plummett or Manor house grey for the wood work... You could do the floor too.... Take these ideas and extend them to the other rooms... See what feels right.. Let me know what you think and if you get all that... and have more questions.. I just can't ever write a paragraph!! :))

I forgot to say - a few years ago when we were looking for our bay, I hunted around for shaped curtain poles that didn’t cost a fortune. I eventually found this family based company via a forum. They are called Celtic Dreams Ironworks and are based in north Wales. Their website gives full instruction of what to do to measure up. I went for a simple white pole - and it still looks brilliant. They do a U shape (option C I think) and they also do a different option that might work well - it’s basically two smaller poles that are secured just at one end that is then folded back against the wall. (I’m not explaining particularly well - but they have a couple of photo’s). Over the years, several other friends have used them, and all have been happy. They are more expensive than IKEA, however I found them to be lots cheaper than B&Q and John Lewis etc. https://mob.curtainpoles.co.uk/index.html

Regarding your colour scheme, based on the slate colour sofa you selected, we see two options. It depends on the mood your would like to convey through. A lighter version or a darker one, a bit more intense and masculine, but very on trend and oh-so English. Probably our favourite. :)

For the floor we suggest using wood-effect tile in smokey brown, they really look so natural, our clients love it! https://www.designangels.co.uk/product-page/andira-wood-effect-floor-tile. In a herringbone pattern for that extra design statement. And for the walls, we would go for either Farrow&Ball Green smoke 47 or Dimpse 277. See some photos below.
