Help! How to modernise / increase curb appeal on my 1970s dormer house
Comments (16)Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? It may be an idea to sketch out various options (with colour!) to see what you like then get quotes on the various options http://linleydevelopments.co.uk/portfolio/bungalow-to-a-chalet-style-conversion/#prettyPhoto[portfolio]/1/...See MoreHouse frontage advice
Comments (13)Hi Lena, here are some ideas: First, the windows. They are the eyes of the house and have the biggest impact, especially on properties of this period as the windows were generally large and wide. Here are some pics of a project with which I was involved, where the new owner wanted bays to add some depth to a charactistically flat 1960s front. We added 5 vertical panes rather than 4 to strengthen the vertical lines. The side panes were only very narrow but they worked well. Note, these are bay (square) not bow (rounded) windows that are more in keeping with the period as the curves don't conflict with the modern straight lines. Second, pick a smart front door that is in-keeping with the period. These were generally flat not panelled (again, avoid Georgian pastiche). There are some superb contemporary doors around in oak and other hardwoods or for painting. If you paint, pick a strong colour to add interest. Don't be a sheep with ubiquitous dark grey. Third, cladding. Often tile hung, weatherboarded or rendered in the 60s, you can update cladding easily. Painting tiles with masonry paint is a cost effective way to brighten outmoded or dull tiles quickly and cost effectively. Pick a good paint with a 25 year guarantee. Wood cladding is also popular but think about different styles rather than wide plank, as shown in the pictures. Rendering can replace tiles or wood or uPVC cladding and can look very sharp against surrounding bricks. Again, an opportunity to play with colour too....See MorePlease help. Comments (17)Hello Sarah. Ref your skirting, the Ogee and Chamfered are lovely but it may be helpful to consider the ceiling height in relation to the depth of the skirting. We are in a 1970s townhouse - VERY plain architecture - and the ceilings are not high. The skirting is very simple - around 4” and just a slight slope in to the wall along the top edge - so it’s recessive to the eye and gives a lot of wall space (i need space for art on the wall so this is good for me). The other thing I would consider is how much dust they might collect (boring but in my case, the easier to clean the better)....See MoreImproving the frontage of our bungalow
Comments (18)I think your house is really pretty and I love the terracotta tiles which will grow more beautiful as they age. The brown windows and door are the problems. The soft grey greens and taupes look lovely with red brick so painting the windows will be a great improvement. if you prefer white windows, it will still be an improvement and then you can have a bright, colourful door. I agree removing the big round shrub by the front door will open up the frontage, but leave the rest of the plants. Here’s some window colour ideas....See Morerickyconrad
