Broken plan, partition etc ideas for long living room/play area

We have a long narrow living room leading into our kitchen (via sliding doors). We have a toddler and her play area is at the kitchen end of living room. At the moment, the living room has no units/shelving, just a couch, chair and TV (as per drawing). The play area is full of toys and a kids ikea chair. The house is small and there is nowhere else to put a play area.

We would really like to set up something that will divide our area from hers without completely sectioning it off. This is for a number of reasons - firstly the whole room looks long and narrow (and slightly odd with 2 fireplaces). Secondly there is no real adult space, the whole room is like a kids playroom with adult furniture in part of it. Thirdly, the play area is already light poor because of it's distance from the front and back windows and so needs natural light coming in from both sides.

The play area is in the best location as she likes to keep an eye on us! Can anyone make any suggestions? We have looked at pictures of partition options/broken plan/half height walls but really can't come to a conclusion about what would be best.

Note: the living room door was the door for the playroom. The other door was boarded up when the two rooms where opened into one.

Put up louvre doors, so that light gets through, but offers you the ability to close off the play area in the evening perhaps and not to have to look at it whilst relaxing.

Dear Fearn, I believe you are doing the right thing by opening up the dining room and living room. This will allow the double aspect to maximise on the natural daylight and give you more options to play with colour. I am a big fan of green and believe it has been very underestimated in the past, however it is coming back into fashion! Calke Green is beautiful, I believe it would work very well for a dining room, making it inviting and cosy. Do bear in mind though that colours come out darker once they are on the wall than originally anticipated. Before you make your final decision, I would try samples of the colour on each wall so you see the colour in different lights and throughout the day and evening. I would also try at least a couple of other colours such as Cooking Apple Green, Vert de Terre or Lichen. For the woodwork, it depends what effect you want to achieve, for instance if you want to close the room in to make it more cosy, I would paint it all the same colour, otherwise I find Wimborne White is always a winner and I use it a lot, it has a very warm creamy hue and is very versatile, it could be an alternative to Slipper Satin which could perhaps be a bit stark, however it is difficult to judge without being in the space. Given that the wall where the hob is 2 meters in the Kitchen would it help if you have full height units along that wall instead of a few wall units. You can have a fridge freezer then a tall unit to house your oven and or microwave and have a corner sink. or have tall units on either side and have the sink where the hob is currently. that will help increase your storage space and also have a lot of units put in. You could then have a 1.8 meter kitchen island with your hob etc with more storage and breakfast bar etc. if you can extend into the current dining area slightly even 60cm that will help add another tall unit. Presume you already have a toilet under the stairs. You could move the current door at the back which is on one corner to the middle with bifold doors as you will not have any units there. That will give you more light and a view of the garden. you can build a utility room with your washing machine dishwasher and also have a pantry . As it is one open space would try to have a raised dining area even if it is 15cm and drop it back in the kitchen area. That will give a bit of height in the dining area and guests can get a glimpse of the garden even when they are seated beyond the kitchen island… Would recommend a wooden floor running all the way from the living to the kitchen. i would lay it in a Chevron pattern drawing your eyes all the way to the garden. if you raise the floor in the dining area, you can create some clever storage there.

Hi Jennifer The plan hasn't attached - could you please possibly upload this again in the comment section so I can take a look for you? :) I have two little boys so I can fully understand the play area section - my two have always followed me around so anywhere and everywhere becomes a play area! It is very hard to contain toddlers to be creative in just one area so I can only imagine making sure the open plan space is family friendly as well as useable for everyone is without a doubt a high priority. Hi, I would definitely swap the play and living area over. If you have a snug chair under the window (the big velvet ones look lovely, maybe a pop of colour like blue, green or even pink?) then if you are removing the fire place you could do built ins on that back wall to frame the tv or have floating cupboards under a tv that’s mounted on the wall. A corner sofa could then be run right from the door and down towards the tv wall framing this new cosy space. The play area then sits but the patio doors which is nice with extra light. Low storage could sit next to your corner sofa giving you a place to pop your tea. And a playful rug would zone out the play from the living nicely. I would say the wallpaper, artex and sconces date this room, I have had a little look for some inspiration and I hope it helps 😊 good luck with whatever you decide to go with

Hello there, first I think half height walls; about 750 mm high are a nice option for the partition. The partition need not run all along but can actually run half the width of the living room. This will help close off a corner for the play area, and the walls maybe used for art or something similar. The other half with no partition half wall may be used for some sort of furniture, maybe a small workstation for the kid. This corner, unlike the other one will be more organised, as it is actually visible right from the living room. You can also introduce some high shelves that can be used to store the toys and only remove them when the kid needs to play with that specific one. I think that will better help organise the space.
