how can I make this room more cosy?

I’m struggling to give this “corridor room” a homely feel. I’m thinking of switching out the the taupe writing desk chair for a brighter yellow one, and adding a small rug under that desk, but I have no real ideas for improving the white Pilar of window blind and radiator. I hate the plain white blind but this room is a corridor from front hallway to the kitchen, and the kitchen has these same white blinds, which are very practical there. I hope you can offer some ideas to improve this space! Thank you

Hi,

Here's what I would do:

I'd create one large desk with two work spaces (a long, deep shelf), with 2 comfortable desk chairs. Either wall to wall under the window, or on the wall where the desk with the yellow chair is. That seems like a wall that would be long enough?

If you do the latter, you could put a storage cabinet on the wall where the taupe desk is. Or a comfy chair

Then I'd put a colourful rug on the floor.

I think that less clutter, a couple of larger pieces instead of different desks and chairs, and a rug will make a big difference.

Also, wall lamps/desk lamps to add to the overhead lighting. Useful, and it will add to a cosier feeling if you have different lighting levels.

I think it's the lack of soft furnishings, so a nice rug should sort it.

I would replace the yellow stool with a comfortable chair, add a big rug to cover the floor, hang the mirror on the other side of the window and maybe add a light curtain with a floral pattern over the blinds.

A belated THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This is the final result. We're super happy with it. Room A north facing "through-lounge" in a new build, 3 bed semi detached house Paint Walls: Purbeck Stone, Farrow & Ball Ceiling: Strong White, Farrow & Ball By the way, the room isn't as long and skinny as it looks in the photos. I think you should remove the sofa from kitchen. I like your Burberry stile cushions. They gave me the idea about new carpet from IKEA with similar colour scheme. The glass table will not hide the print and you also can add a few red accessories. They will bright up your kitchen and won't cost you a lot.

Thanks. I've gone off the idea of the long winding path. I think it would take too much space. This is my latest thoughts. Two round lawns that intersect, edged by little pavers, and with a path through the middle (which I'd probably add later). Any thoughts? How can I improve this? Thanks for any opinion. It really helps.

I strongly agree with Ellie and Kingston Mosaics&Tiles. The first thing I will remove would be the yellow stool for one more confortable and also the desk table could be lower.A Rug is a great idea as well ,like Kingston said.

Yes, some soft furnishing would do the trick:) A nice rug, maybe a nice comfy lounge chair and a side table, to make a cozy reading corner. And I would hang some curtains. Also some decorative floor or table lamps would help..

I would find a more interesting, warmer and less stark paint and also paint the radiator in the same colour - whatever colour you choose, you can get an exact match paint suitable for radiators, mixed by someone like Valspar (they do it at B&Q) .

I would then get a lovely rug to coordinate with the paint colour and make it more "homely". I'd also get a coloured/patterned/textured roman blind.

I'd ditch the yellow stool and replace it with something less dominant and a lot more comfortable. I'd also be reluctant to introduce a bright yellow desk. Do you actually need to two work stations? The desk on the left in combination with that high stool looks extremely uncomfortable and difficult to work at, is it overly high?.

Personally, I love the taupe desk, but I can see it is of little practical use in terms of size. I'd be tempted to get rid of it and have some sort of shelving or bookcase on that wall, where you can have photos and accessories, but also to provide somewhere to keep papers, files, post etc.

I'm not sure there's room for the mirror as it stands, but if you feel you need to keep it, would it fit on the wall in between the desk on the left and the window wall?

If you're keen on introducing that bright yellow into the room, why don't you add it with files/folders, cushions or vases etc? You could even choose it for seat upholstery or as accent colour in the blind or rug. Personally, I think it would be a mistake to have too much of such a bright colour, in a relatively small space.

As everyone else has said, soft furnishings! The keyword is "cosy" and when we think of cosy we think of snuggling in to a lovely and soft sofa or bed. A rug would do the trick, but I couldn't find an example to bring together the yellow pop of colour you have. There will be something out there somewhere. Another trick would be to add some curtains to the window, it would immediately feel more homely. You would still be able to use the blinds for privacy and keep the curtains open, it would just add a really lovely soft touch. You can go heavy and keep them to the outside of the window like a frame, or a more delicate type which would gently soften the room.

Another tip would be to get some organisation for the right hand desk. Magazine racks, filing trays or boxes. It is easy to say you should deal with post as it arrives bit WHO actually does that?! You can chuck the letters and papers in to the rack which will make it tidier and immediately easier on the eye.
