Replace kettle with a hot water filter tap

Should I ditch the kettle in the kitchen and replace it with a filtered hot water tap? I’ve been looking into it and can’t make up my mind, there are are so many pros and cons. A lot of reviews say that that they dont last for more than a couple of years. Feedback from people who have had them put it would be much appreciated and if you recommend or regret it! Thank you

Yes go for it.

We have a Quooker in our new kitchen, it's so much easier and tidier, plus it's instantaneous, no filling and waiting for the kettle to boil.

I have never once thought, "oh I wish we still had our kettle.....".

It’s a lot of money ! For me - I’d need to justify how much use it would be ... ie if I worked from home drinking hot drinks all day and most of my cooking started with boiling water in a pan - yes it would be justified . If I only had a cuppa in the morning and one before bed as out at work all day - and mostly micro meals - then no - not worth the investment ...

Insinkerator. It’s a smaller capacity model I use it mostly for drinks but it will pour enough water for boiling pasta or eggs. And it was about £650 including the tap which is hot and cold mixer on one side and the boiling tap on the other. I know someone with a qwooker who says it’s not hot enough for drinks i don’t know how true that is but mine definitely is. Anyhow, really pleased with it.

Hi Aideen, I went for a Franke 4-1 tap last March, and this March had a Kinetico water softener put in, had the softened water line attached to the ‘normal’ hot and cold and kept original hard water for the filtered cold/boiling side of the tap. All good. With the water softener you can literally feel the difference immediately, at first when washing my hands I almost felt like I had to keep rinsing as it felt so creamy! Huge difference to the limescale, the shower head which usually would get clogged up is completely clear, no more pinging off the limescale from the rubber bits!! Definitely makes a difference to cleaning the bath, sink etc, very glad we had it done. Shampoo lathers up without using much, and skin feels softer. Was £1600, so it’s not cheap but I don’t regret it one bit.

Dear Olivia, we install instant hot water taps for many of our clients. They do look great and will give your kitchen that clean aesthetic that we all want. A couple of things to consider first, they require a small tank & filter under the counter so they do take up storage space. They also come with a filtration cylinder which needs replacing regularly enough, this is not a big deal, you can buy the replacement cartridges on amazon. We generally specify Billi taps and have never had any issues. We've put them into commerical premises also that are in constant use. Also worth considering Franke who also do them, still look great and are cheaper.

One aspect that a lot of people never have to consider is what a plus they are if you can't stand for long, or have compromised mobility, or even use a wheel chair.

You don't have to fill a kettle and try to move it around the kitchen and you don't have to try to lift a boiling kettle to pour if you're struggling to stand with a walking stick.

Also because it's instantaneous, you don't have to stand to wait for it to boil. For me it's always a trade off between, trying to stand long enough for the kettle to boil against the difficulty/pain of getting back up if I sit down to wait for it to boil.

I used to have one in my previous house. Started well... then kids were playing with it ( I know some have children lock on now!), the tap got filled with limescale so the boiling water was spitting out ( ouch!) and was so costly to change the filter thingy ( every year roughly)... Then, they are supposed to be economical... well, ours went on quite often! So I wonder... So no, not again.

Love love my quooker. Total luxury (clearly a kettle and a Brita are much cheaper) but it’s a brilliant treat that genuinely makes my life easier and gives the kitchen the wow factor.

We have a Quooker Fusion Flex with filtered cold water and wouldn’t be without it.
