small space for sitting dinning combo

My sitting and dinning room are confined in one small space. Besides the idea of replacing my six seater dinning set(rectangular table) with a 4 seater round table, is it possible to do away with a dining area completely and still enjoy the sitting room?

I need a dining table, I have 2 young children and we sit at the table every evening for a family meal together. Not everyone is in the same situation though, so how often do you use the table?

It looks like the armchairs can get pushed over a bit too.

Could the long sofa go against that left side window, might offer more room

I need advise on how to get a modern contemporary showroom house look. The room is an open plan kitchen with reception 2. Spray frost or use decorative cling film on the glass in the china cabinet so you can't see in it and use it to organize all the stuff. Pull the table away from the wall and use an upholstered bench in the nook to seat a 5th person at the table for dining. Use the opposite end of the table for your computer space so you can scoot all 4 chairs under it and out of the way. Replace the short curtains with fabric or fiber roman shades. Lower your picture collage so the center of it is 60" above the floor.

I think the option of having the tv under the stairs.. Is the best idea.. Maybe have a tv, media unit made to measure if possible .. Draws or cupboards underneath for storage. Small shelves at the sides for little ink-naks. If needed.. A smaller maybe glass oblong table in front of the window. The table will still allow light through.. Making sure passable through to the stairs.. And the sofa on the back wall.. Lovely rug in the centre with coffee table or chest for extra storage if needed... Maybe some open floating shelves off set above the sofa. Use an accent colour with accessories.. From the rug or cushions.. Don't go overboard with large piece of furniture... Simple statements....

Is the dining room used mainly at night? If so, I wouldn't try and fight the light. Either dark muted shades of red or green would work with the wood (although you may want to change the blue on the arch if opting for red). As Bagpuss said you can use mirrors to make the room feel bigger. Note the red paint will bring the ŵalls in (and potentially green depending on shade) but it would be negated by mirrors. I'd consider a light patterned rug under the table and maybe a table runner depending on your style. I'd also go for a glass pendant or chandelier and look to add chrome/nickle candlesticks or glass and chrome hurricane lamps etc on the table, along with other accessories, as they will add to the intimate feel and will catch the light. You could also consider cushions for the chairs. If you've got the budget I would also consider adding ŵall lights, if not is there room for floor or table lamps anywhere? If you don't want a darker space, then I'd look at warm neutral paints again with mirrors. To add life do add flowers and/or plants, art, pattern in a rug etc. Whichever option I'd paint the door in the ŵall colour as that should help it feel a little bigger

Thnx Ellie, that's my challenge here. My children do have their meals at the table and we get to use it as a whole family when we are all home. This particular one I feel, is taking up more space than it should. I would love to have a bookshelf, sideboard, lamp and potted plant in the room and I don't know how it would all fit without resizing the dinning area.
I should push the couch tmrw n let you know how to that works out.
