What is the type of material used on the island counter, and what is it called? It is unusually beautiful!

I love the walnut and the fusion! Can’t do entire kitchen / dining area in walnut so thinking of mixing cabinets. I’m not a fan of painted cabinets and wondered if smoke grey stain would clash or go well with walnut

I think if it were me I would do a few things- firstly also post this dilemma on the US version of the site (when you set up your account you probably put the wrong setting and the site thinks you are in the U.K.) I would also be thinking about how you entertain- it it were me I would want a big kitchen island with stools opposite so cooking can be sociable and they can also provide casual eating at the same height as a chefs table further down the island. (I don’t know if you use that term but I mean a Chefs table to be a tall informal dining table with tall comfortable chairs for leisurely and sociable dining.) Personally I would put the formal dining table where the pool table is- I think a rarely used table is easy to keep well presented and makes a great first time impression if it is near the entrance- it is also nicer for guests to walk though a dining room than a living room to your personal space. I think I might use the wine wall idea as a divide between the pool table/formal dining area- with glass on both sides it just adds some separation without making the space feel smaller. As far as the nook in the middle I think how you use it depends on how you socialise- you could have it set up for playing cards, smoking ‘gars, star gazing.... but if it were my house I would have a round pedestal table in the middle and use it like a bar cart for your favourite spirits- with an ice bucket and some sliced fruit ready guests could help them selves which also makes entertaining easier

If the room is big enough then i'd design the island with shallow depth units on the back and then an overhang (i always use dummy drawer line units for these especially if its a handleless door style so you can open the doors) and that would keep the island in proportion and not look to narrow (like it is now). But this also depends on the worktop you've chosen, as you have a howdens plan you are going to be limited to what howdens can supply and that might be why the howdens 'designer'/salesperson has designed the island like it is. You could start adding 300 units at each end, but you'd lose one seating position, the other option may be to have 'downstands' where the worktop carries on down to the floor, again depending on your worktop it may need to be a mitred joint, especially if you have a grain/pattern/edge profile. Even then if the room is big enough i'd still have shallow depth units for the extra storage and to make a real statement of the island also have the downstands, lots of quartz worktops are in jumbo sizes and these are 1400mm wide so your island could be upto 2400x1400 so you could easily have the post in the middle with a bit of careful planning.
