Looking to revamp lounge/living room. Dark blue and yellow/gold ideas?

Great colour combo. Here’s a few examples I saw on Pinterest. The first one is a bit crazy I know, but these are just ideas.

Sounds exciting, definitely more stimulating than restful. Some things to consider, does the room have either high ceilings or some good sized windows? If it lacks either of these, then I probably wouldn’t put the blue on all the walls, stick either to blue furniture or just do one wall. As the above images show, this is almost the strongest contrast you can get, so focus the drama in one place, don’t go dotting lots of yellow all around a dark blue room, it’s better being focussed. Keep the rest of the room colours fairly neutral, I would go with sandy beige tones (so the underlying tone is still yellow). If the room is dark, don’t think that yellow walls will make it bright, they’ll actually feel a little dull. Yellow is a colour that needs to be in good lighting in order to really look fabulous. So have the yellow wherever it will get bright light on it.

The pool sounds very nice! I think you'll have to treat the dining room and lounge as one. I assume the jade curtains are new so what about a dark inky blue feature ŵall on the wall adjacent to the sofa and tv (you could also repeat in dining) to give it a cosy feel? The rest of the walls could be a mid grey (not too dark) with a blue undertone. You could then accent in a deep red? Longer term I see you appear to love bookcases so would maybe think about one on that end ŵall. I'd pull the sofa away a little from the curtains for now and longer term maybe add 1/2 chairs. What type of fireplace were you planning as the curtains are quite close? Maybe a leather accent chair in that corner keeping with a cosy feel ( Am I right in thinking jo'burg isn't that hot btw?!)

Start by taking out everything you don't want/need Paint your walls white to start with as this will give the room a fresh new feel, you can always change this if you want but you can't go wrong with white. Dulux pure brilliant white is a good choice so you don't get confused with the cold/warm undertones. Change the largest sofa for something smaller, I don't mind the other one as it is a modern style but if it is worn and you feel you need to change then now is the best time. Wool fabric is a great hard wearing choice and is easy to clean. I have children and have had mid charcoal wool fabric sofas for 4 years and they are perfect! Don't forget that your sofa is an investment so put your money into this as décor can be changed a lot cheaper! Paint the fire surround colour to a charcoal to make it stand out and also link in with the sofas NOW.... is the fun part! I'd concentrate on the red curtains and find some art work or wallpaper or a rug or cushion that you REALLY love with red in and possibly some other bright colours. Be creative & bold! I would consider changing the green curtains but by this stage you'll have a better feel of the room and where it is heading and how you want the room to look from here. If you are worried about the cost of curtains, I'd look at IKEA as you can get some lovely cheap curtains from there. Once you've got to this stage, I'd post some before pics and after pics for us on Houzz and ask for further advice on decorating as you would have a blank slate and something that you LOVE that you can work with on the colours to bring in touches of texture and warmth and comfort from there. firstly I love the vibe of your room colour glorious and the chairs and tan sofa are fab. I would try and balance the sitting arrangement so centred around the fireplace. I would defo have a rug perhaps in golds citrus shades very decedent perhaps geometric pattern to go with the moody walls and pick up pieces like mirror and photo frames in gold and copper tones. I like the bay bare and let the light flood in or gorgeous sheer voiles. little milk stools are lovely touch so would keep them. Drinks trolley with beautiful cut glass decanters and glass bouncing light across the room. why stop there over sized crystal lamps and chandeliers with lovely shades. I would be careful with art work as my clash with strong colour on walls may not even need anything more. beautful coffee table in crystal with gilt frame adorned with lovely bits and pieces that reflect your life and personality. and perhaps a tall glass shelf unit with similar frame. old books throws. im getting carried away sorry but would love to have a go at this project have fun that's the most important thing I feel and only invest inpieces you totally love because then you will always love them and can always move them around to refresh or even style another room

Hi khowieson! This sounds like a great space with lovely tall ceilings! I’d recommend having a look at our Dulux Heritage range of paint –this has colour palettes specifically selected to complement the character and style of traditional period properties, such as yours. In terms of colour, I’d suggest Dulux Country Sky, which is a gorgeous, soft grey-blue. Go for a flat matt finish of paint to give that effortlessly classic look you are after. If youre looking to do a revamp why not post some photos so people can make shopping suggestions etc. It also helps people to see what's in the room already so you know what to work with

I had colours like these in 2 of my homes for years. Blues and yellows work really well, they're beautiful and striking together, but we found that some things don't work well with them. Golds and browns work very well (gilt mirrors, leather armchairs, etc.) but -- surprisingly -- black is really out of place. I had a pair of enormous tower speakers with my sound system that could blow the windows out on half volume and were a really striking statement, but they were black and they looked weird. So I wrapped them in muslin sleeves that I was able to paint to match the walls. They were sunflower yellow for a couple of years! I stretched muslin over the removable fronts too, and spray painted them different colours.

Fast forward to the future and I had to get rid of the colours to rent the house out when working overseas. And suddenly, when back to whites / magnolias / etc., the rooms looked twice the size! And they felt twice the size too!

Today my company builds garden rooms, which are typically fairly small, and the use of striking colours inside really shrinks the spaces down. Most of our customers keep things fairly neutral as a result and get the striking statements from the furniture, rugs and fittings.
