Antler ceiling light? Yay or nay?

We are in the process of redecorating our entire house. Trying to decide on a new ceiling light for our family room which is open plan to our kitchen diner. I've seen an antler ceiling light from Next that I'm drawn to but husband thinks it will look out of place. It's a modern town house, low ceilings, walls will be dulux pebble shore ("greige" I think is the term!), grey sofa, oatmeal curtains, large similar coloured rug on oak laminate flooring. I'm thinking of navy blue accents in cushions etc. The kitchen units are white shaker style. I think the antler light will add a bit of interest and quirkiness to an otherwise neutral and "safe" room, especially as we rarely actually use the ceiling light so it needs to look decorative even when it's not on. However I'm not very confident in my interior design skills and just wondered if it's actually a terrible idea.

I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise.

The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Sometime the area above the fireplace is the only space in the room the TV can go, and when its property thought out it can work.

Well, the chippies van was up the drive when I got home from work - a little unexpected. At first I thought that he was sleeping with the Mrs, but then I remembered that he needed to finish the skirting boards. He's done a cracking job - quite a few tricky internal/external corners, plus the corners not being exactly 90 degrees he was back and forth to his saw all the time. He really did a stirling job. It was 13 meters of skirting in total - which took him 4.5 hours in total (over 2 evenings) and it cost me £90. Considering I was origionally going to do it, it could well be the best £90 I've spent on this whole kitchen. I need to get a lick of paint inside the alcove that's pictured. Our little fishtank will be returning in there, but as it's out I may as well do it. When we get the bar stools, and dining room table & chairs I will update again. So: What would I change/add/remove ADD - Somewhere to hang the tea-towels. We have some on the inside of a cuboard, but they keep falling off. Maybe I need some slightly more expensive 'hangers'. The space where they could have gone we put a spice rack/draw thingie - that's probably better though. ADD - We forgot about the bin! Now we have our pedal-bin basically kicking around the kitchen. The Mrs has already filled the cupboards to maximum capacity so I'm having trouble getting an internal cupboard one past her. I think I may just fit one then deal with her later. The bin has gravitated to a semi-perminant place, but with the kids trying to be *cough* helpfull the wall is already beginning to get the odd splatter of 'stuff' where they just throw their food in the general direction of it. Last night I said 'Well, why don't we just put it in the utility room' - She shot that idea down instantly as she obviously isn't happy about the extra 4 steps that it would take to walk all-that-way into another room. Poor thing! Typical woman lol. ADD - At the start of the project I would have got the electricians to chase in another mains wire from the fusebox so that it comes out of the kitchen wall centrally to the back garden, then I would put a PIR Security Light in. I know that it's not a big job by any means, and I could, and probably will, do it myself over the coming weeks but if I could have had it without a wire on the outside of the house then that'd would have been perfect. Also, thinking about it, I would have actually got him to do it at the front of the house as well as he re-wired the whole downstairs with new fusebox etc.

hmm, I don't think it's for me either...it looks more of a seasonal piece and more suited to a rustic interior.

A little too “themed” for me and it does look a bit Christmassy. I like the colour though.

I have various sized Antlers on mounts in a several rooms in my old cottage - but it’s the home of a Scotsman and we have tartan dotted around too - so it’s kind of like a Scottish hunting lodge feel, ( but in Dorset !) so you could say I’m a fan of antlers... but for me even, this light fitting is not quite right. I can’t put my finger on it - but it’s a no from me too - sorry !

@rach: antlers are ‘shed’ by stags yearly. Then a new, bigger one grows back. So... no deer has died for these antlers. And the antlers used for the lamp might not even be real.

Having said that, I vote no too. Just doesn’t go with the rest of the interior, by your description.

I think they look like resin ones? And I see what everyone is saying ski lodge and trying too hard etc, however I love the shape of antlers and I think I’m leaning to I like them for the room! Resin or no I think the colour works with the grey, and texture contrast would be good and like I said I love the pattern produced by antler (or trees) growth. ???
But everyone else is a nay so maybe not??

I like em but would be prepared to get bored of them and change em in a year or two. I'd also not have them as the one quirky thing in an otherwise neutral space. I'd chuck a few sheepskins around too and some old school 70s punk artwork to give it an anarcho-country look. So you probably shouldn't listen to me.

I Like the design of the antler light, but I agree that it could be a lovely seasonal piece and maybe not the best for a quite modern interior?
