Hall, stairs and landing - before and after
Comments (9)so pleased to see these before and after photo's as I'm currently after inspiration for my own stairs and landing which are both very dark with hardly any natural light ... 25yrs ago I spent about 12mths removing layer upon layer of paint from skirtings and dado's etc from a 1930's property to get back down to the natural wood and have been exceptionally hesitant to slap another layer of paint on them all after so much hard work in the past, but having seen this now, I think its the way forward that I should be going .... so well done, the whole look you have created is wonderful...See MoreHall, stairs, landing wall treatment
Comments (2)Hello Stuart_Smith4711, Just reading your dilemma, it seems you have great options here, but naturally it comes down to a budget at the end of all ideas! These are some of my thoughts and options: Option 1: You could keep the contrasting spectrum of light and dark, which adds appeal but maybe change the colours altogether just to mix it up a bit. Option 2: It seems from your photos that you don't have much light around the stairways. You could change the darker spectrum to a lighter spectrum as well. This will bounce more light around those shady areas of the stairways. Option 3: Get a wallpaper mural, whether for just for the lighter spectrum or both. This will create "another world" between the floors of your house, which will be interesting as you pass through. Option 4: Hang your eclectic art pieces as you wish along the stairways walls. Perhaps theming them up or down the stairs by size, soft colours to bright colours, etc. Option 5: Buy some new artwork for a change of scenery. Option 6: Have some bespoke artwork specifically created for complimentary or contrasting effect to your final decision of decor. As I am a bespoke artwork artist, I would like to offer my services to you if option 6 takes your interest. I also have many eclectic pieces I have created already that are available to view and to buy if I can encourage you to have a look at at your leisure: Bespoke Designs: http://www.houzz.co.uk/projects/1720017//bespoke-designs The Jones Collection Gallery: http://thejonescollection.gallery If there is anything I can help you with, feel free to contact me through my houzz profile or my website. Comments (17)I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy the process...See MoreDark hall, stairs and landing paint ideas
Comments (3)When you enter the house are the stairs immediately in front of you? Where do the doors either side lead to? I have stairs directly in front of the front door (no hall) and a living room on the right. My staircase gets most of the light from the glazed front door and the glazed living room door. Changing to glazed doors can really help with lighting. Sorry, I haven’t made any suggestions for colour! I’d personally just paint it in a brilliant white first and then decide on a colour later on....See MoreLaura Connolly
