Suitable obscured glass for Victorian front door?
Comments (7)You could always have two pieces of plain glass installed and then spray them with glass paint. Rust Oleum do a good range. Alternatively, the multitude of firms that make glass splashbacks use toughened glass, which could be suitable for a front door. You could choose one of the colours that is already in your stained glass panel that you have and have two panels made up to compliment. You are best to approach a window firm and ask their advice, because you don't want to risk having glass that is easy to break and therefore leave yourself open to burglary. That is, unfortunately why lots of people used the wire. As when the glass is broken, you can't put your hand through and undo the door!...See MoreHow best to hide these electrics above our Victorian front door?
Comments (24)Hi - in response to Carol's comment, I attach a photo of what we've done so far. We had the power company come in and move the meter down slightly (that was the bit on the left in the original photo above) and put it onto a smaller backplate for us. Then we had our electrician in to put in a new fusebox. Then we had our carpenter in to make a small box picking up the moulding on the inside front door, which also matches the doors leading off the hallway. We had the plasterer in to make good the area. So far that's where we are as we don't want to paint until we do the whole hallway, and first we need to change the radiator from the old flat panel one to something more in keeping with the property. I particularly resonated with Jonathan's comment above, with the thought that the eye wants to 'read' the ceiling and floor details...we felt a big box going across the whole top of the front door would feel a little 'top heavy' - as we came down the stairs and as you entered the hallway from the kitchen. We are pleased that the footprint of the whole thing was massively reduced. It turns out to be a handy little place to stash a torch as well. Thanks for everyone's comments - it was very much appreciated. Maybe I can send a photo of the final final result once decorated!...See MoreFront door needs help. Front garden too
Comments (4)Hi, are you in the UK? Just that I’ve never seen sand used in that way. With the path you could add small pea shingle around the paving slabs to tidy it up a bit. If that is your front garden on the left, then as Ellie suggests, planting will help. However, sand is not nutritious enough to grow plants in, unless you have the climate to grow cacti and succulents. What to grow depends on your location and whether the area is sunny or shady. A pot either side of the front door would look smart....See MoreGarage Door and Front Door Repaint ASAP- Help Please!
Comments (25)I would be inclined to have wall washing lights either side. Not sure about a canopy unless it is pitched like the existing porch roof with brick infill either side but otherwise kept open. Maybe stick with the lights first to see if that alone does the trick. Making the bed on the left the same shape as that on the right and repeating the planting would help to bring symmetry. I am not sure about the two tall Pom Pom shrubs in front of the windows. Sorry I cannot make out what they are. Could they be moved one at each corner of the house perhaps to make a full stop? Taking away some of the grass to extend the drive in front of the door would open up the entrance too. It is difficult to see on the photo but the grass seems to curve towards the door. It would be better if it followed the curve of the drive out and away from the door, basically an expansion of your step that seems to be a curve, and then return in front of the bed on the left in the photo. You could have a path here in front of the left bed in the same material as the drive. I know planting and reconfiguration of your drive wasn’t on your remit so I hope you don’t mind!...See MoreAlix W
