Design Dilemma: L-shaped living/dining room

Hi there! My husband and I are about to be first time homeowners and we are trying to figure out how to set up an awkward L-shaped living dining room. We want to maximize seating for when we have friends/family over. We are also planning on putting a TV over the fireplace. We can't figure out how to set it up so that we don't have empty space in the corner or in front of the fireplace. We are planning on putting a dining table in the left of the below photo (it attaches to the kitchen). For context, the half wall in the far right of the photo is next to the front door. The picture was taken from the corner of the "L". Any advice on layout options is appreciated!

A great sized room and looks lovely with plenty of light. Always useful to draw with chalk or tape onto the ground key pieces of furniture to see if you can walk around them easily.

That room is fab i doubt you will have too much trouble making that a perfect living room :) I can see where id put a big mirror which is that wall over there where the wall grid is. I think that would look fab!! Is that a bar over there on the right of the picture? The only thing i find abit odd is the fireplace looks like it should be more central on that wall ^^ Love the floors and wall colour.

I would choose one wall to wallpaper as a feature wall, perhaps the wall that spans the lounge and dining area as that is well lit. I recently redecorated my kitchen diner and, like you, I wanted to add interest without making it look too busy. I chose a slate-effect paper in dark grey; it looks so effective that I am about to paper the window wall on my staircase with the natural/brown version. There are some fabulous trompe l'oeil papers on the market - what about a wood block effect, a leather-look or a faux library? I found all of these on eBay... Good luck and do, please, post before & after pics when you have finished.

If you take the 290 unit off the back run and island, I think that would be sufficient? As you've got kids I think a banquette seat would be ideal for family games, homework, crafts etc. Banquettes are around 60cm, table 90cm so that leaves 113cm which I think is more than sufficient both visually and practically as it's the same gap I have behind my kitchen table. Choose chairs that push under and consider the table legs carefully depending on the number of chairs wanted, pedestal tables often work. I would however take the sink off the island and maybe install a prep sink instead so the back run would be DW, sink, bin, induction hob (I'd integrate the oven personally). Is the shower room a must? It seems quite a trek to reach there with the number of doors unless there was a way to extend the 2nd front door forward and create access from the hall there. Also wondering if you'd considered removing the wall between snug and the old kitchen? It may make the area more useable rather than trying to fill the old kitchen

Hi Sophie, so sorry to be a pain but we would need all the dimensions and where the window are on the wall, and the width of the windows and doors, like this:- metres and cm's are easier. I guessed:- So i made the entrance in to a reading area with bookcases and an armchair. Followed by a good desk to break up the long wall, leading to a seating area overlooking the garden. Tucked around the corner is the T.V area.

Hi, its a lovely room

I agree drawing out where you'd like to place your existing furniture is a good idea, then you can see how much available space you have left. If you have budget and Interior Designer would be able to create a couple of layouts for you to help you utilise the space (much more affordable than you think)

The fireplace is lovely have you considered keeping it as a relaxing zone and possibly putting the TV elsewhere?

I’m not sure on the full layout of you room, but could you have the TV on the wall you have taken the photo from with the L-Shaped sofa facing it.

And then you could add a couple of comfy chairs either side of the fireplace with a rug in the middle (always have at least the feet of your furniture over the rug so it doesn’t look like a little island in the middle of your floor) similar to the image below.

I disagree with you a little 'Interiors with Louise' because the fireplace is out of alignment and is not central. You can then achieve that look you have presented when that has been fixed but i think maybe the chairs would be in the way when entering into the room. Maybe get rid of the fireplace is my humble opinion. Id also like to see the other half of the room then can get more accurate ideas :) The table near the kitchen is definately a cool idea and the seating then could either be sofa backing onto that area and the tv on the wall i cannot see in the photo lol ^^ But i think creating pathways so lots of room around furniture to begin with placing out the basics :) Hope this helps im not an interior designer but have had lots of experiance in home making. Let me know if you need any more ideas
