How to Design First Floor Extension
Comments (9)Hi Guys Thanks for the suggestions so far. Balcony a possibility and nice views out the back, although I wonder how much we would actually sit out there as opposed to the garden (it’s also west facing, so no sun in the morning when perhaps a coffee and newspaper might be the best time to take advantage sitting out there). That leads me to think inside space would be more useful, although agree that there should be a step / break in the brickwork externally where the landing is, to add some interest and not just have a flat wall across the back. I’ve had a go at drawing a version with two gable ends and a flat roof and lantern in the middle - not very well illustrated, but hopefully it is an improvement on the box option. Re changing the pitch of the roof, my concern is that it is already very shallow so whether this would affect performance? I don’t think we would be able to increase the height. Thanks again for all your comments and ideas, I will keep posting to let you know what happens and may employ one of you soon to do a proper design job on this :) Greg...See Moreflat or half sloping ceiling on extension?
Comments (15)The problem - if we end up with this stupid large nib by the alcove is that it kind of dictates the edge of the living room unless we do something clever with it ie build off a bookcase or drinks unit to the left of it to visually extend the lounge) and then run the roof from that. I’ve taken some pics as it is now because you can see visually how much it slopes on the blockwork as it’s not yet boarded. So we could run it flat to just before the rooflight and then slope it down which will visually make the lounge area look wider than it is - or we do it from the nib....See Morehidden gutter dilemma
Comments (1)There are different ones you can get where they sit behind the fascia board so shouldn’t effect your actual roof. Someone on here might know. We looked into it as got a similar extension but ended up having the front of the fibreglass roof painted black with black guttering and you barely notice it. Thought it would look awful on show but it doesn’t....See MoreSmart sun shading solutions for South-facing extension
Comments (5)We're building a Passive house and are debating about brise soleil at the moment to shade the downstairs rooms. We live in Cumbria so similar to you it's only going to be necessary for 2-3 months a year, so nothing too intrusive/ugly. There are some good examples out there, but it's about knowing what to look for. You might find that it doesn't need to be as wide as you think - only enough to block the sun at its highest couple of hours in the day, and then in winter when the sun is lower you still get the light in...See MoreUser
