handless gloss or shaker kitchen ?

Hi everyone

Thought we had come to a decision on a handless gloss kitchen with marble effect worktop and splashback.

I love the grey and blue shaker style.

I was given the impression early on that shakers can be hard to maintain in house with young children and a dog knocking into them.

I like the clean lines of the handless and thought they’d be easy to wipe clean.

Recently I have had people warn me that the handless always look mucky with finger marks etc and can mark really easy.

What are your views?

You could try a matt handleless as this gives you the clean lines without having the issue of fingermarks on the gloss. I have seen a matt handleless in a dark blue and it looks fantastic

Hello, It all depends on what finish your door is in from a durability point of view. Yes a flat slab laminate door is easy to clean as it's one flat surface, but a simple square foil wrapped laminate shaker door with no cock bead is not much harder to look after. Please see image attached of one of our past projects in factory sprayed Light Grey. This hopefully shows you, you can achieve a shaker style kitchen but in a very contemporary way, through the elongated cup handle with the grey mirror splashback. I love both, and they each have their good points and are suited to different settings. As a designer, though, I often prefer the Shaker designs - I don't know why, but they often seem to provide a bit more scope for creativity! Caldicot Kitchens

Hello Billy, thanks for your kind comments! Yes it does look amazing :-). Yes, I'm having all Siemens appliances, the kitchen shop gets a good deal on that brand so I thought I'd go for it, otherwise I would probably have gone for Bosch or Neff if sourcing appliances myself. Miele would have been out of my budget. The ovens you see are 1 Siemens self cleaning combination microwave/oven and 1 combination full steam/oven. I think some new models are out already and if they are out, it means you can get the older model for a cheaper price, which is great unless there is a must have function in the new model you can't do without and the current Siemens ovens do look good anyway. If you've already decided on the brand, design and the shop, you can still ask for a discount, in fact most of the independent shops I went to did offer some discount when I asked ( not much discount but better than nothing ). Yes, having an extension built ( approx. 5.5m x3m ) with pitched roof, 3 velux and sliding doors ( as in picture ), the shell has been built, steels in etc now waiting for 1st fix for electrician. Btw, I don't mean to be nosey into your kitchen design but do you really need 4 ovens? I know we always see them in glossy magazines/photos and it does look good, I also wanted 4 ovens too for the look but then decided it was pointless if I didn't need to use 4 ovens and you would save some money too. On your island ( if you have space ), you could consider an overhang of the worktop on the opposite side of the sink so people could sit there, as I've heard from people with islands that when guests come over, everyone hangs around the island and those that don't have an overhang wish they did. You can chat with your guests whilst cooking/ preparing. If you have older kids and want to get them involved, they can sit on that side and perhaps help prepare too :-). That's my vision for my kitchen anyway :-).

A TH kitchen is the dream!! Far from the B&Q stuff we are looking at now. Saying that, I think when we go for it properly it’ll be DIY kitchens. We saw some amazing cabinetry and so many practical options. Yes it is pretty dark so maybe white cabinets/marble style worktop and green tiles might brighten it up. Even changing the sink to white too! We are actually going to get a whole new island-including carcass. The one we have now is so impractical with just two shelves. We will make it a little bigger and have drawers so when we remove the high wall units, we have somewhere to put those bits and easy to access. The whole way the kitchen has been done is really irritating...only 3 drawers in the whole room! I’m only 5ft too so it’s a struggle reaching anything in those high cabinets!

I have matt handleless (dove grey) at home and white gloss matt handleless in my holiday home. Nothing really to choose between them. Regardless the marks are there it’s just that on the matt you can’t really notice them until the show in a specific light.

Just to mention that cleaning the handleless groove part is quick and easy.

I think I just need to make a decision ... not great at choosing handles which is why I think I’m leaning towards handless! Simplicity.
