Unsure which walls to feature in my unsymmetrical living room :-(
Comments (13)Thank you guys for suggestions - I like the idea of coloured blinds in the windows Pat Oliver designs - trouble is, we are quite close to the road hence why we chose in the end the wooden Venetian blinds for privacy - although with the wall colour they make everything look orange (the colour on walls is "hot sand" by homebase but is more orangy than I had hoped :-( Its very hard to know what colour to paint the room with the biscuit carpet, and natural wood...I can't really change too much as we don't have a budget. I was hoping to get the look and definition I wanted by paint/paper...but might speak to my hubby to see if we could get some more shelving. Minnie - yes good idea about putting back a little of the wall - I was thinking the same myself - although there is only one door to the room and it is smack bang in the middle on opposite wall which makes things more complicated. :-( I imagine it would be expensive though as you say. I have been trying to find pics of rooms with 2 chimney breasts myself so if you do find some, please can you post them for me as I would love to see them. Thank you both again for your comments xx...See Moreconfuse about living room
Comments (14)Hello Ali, Okay so you want to change a few things.. Firstly though you need to get some of the placements to suit the dimensions of the room.. It's a longish room so there is actually plenty of space for dining and living.. There is only 1 window and a door.. So what I would do is have a very large mirror on the end wall (dining table end) Paint it the same colour as the wall. Bring the dining table out past the line of shadow on the floor, as per the second image from the top. This then opens the dining space up and hopefully if you had a mirror would bounce light back into the room.. It also gives an interesting perspective from that end of the room as you can see a glimpse of the other end of the room. I would possibly paint the back wall a lighter colour that blends with the floor and compliments the yellow.. Something like an off white or a creamy chalky colour. You can then add a lighter beige sofa and accent the yellow with creams and a bit of brown for warmth.. I notice you have a rug with brown and cream and also brown? dining chairs.. I too wonder what the tv is sitting on? Can you move this.. Could you consider perhaps having a wall mount for the tv? I would re-arrange the sofa configuration so that none of the seating is blocking the window.. So move the whole lot further into the room.. Work out where you might want the tv and then you can arrange the seating with a proximity for watching.. Don't make the seating area about watching the tv but more about conversation, relaxation and creating a homely feel. So moving the rug further in as well would be a good idea.. Maybe you want to choose a L shape sofa.. and arrange the white chairs window side.. place a coffee table or something in the middle and that way the side of the room opposite the window is more open.. Thus creating flow within the room.. Hang some art works or another mirror or both so you introduce something more onto the back wall.. : ))...See Morechoosing a hearth for my living room fireplace
Comments (16)hi all, as promised (or threatened ?!) here are the photos of my new fireplace. I am still not convinced that the wallpaper on the chimney breast is right and we are thinking of just repainting the whole area white/offwhite. (The carpet and curtains are new). the red in the previous photo above is what was on the wall pre-installation and i was hoping to replicate that, but could not find a plain red paper anywhere! so have gone with red curtains instead. any advice regarding replacing the stripy paper welcome !! thankyou...See MoreLooking for tips on incorporating plants into my my living room?
Comments (7)I'd recommend the Kentia Palm, they're relatively easy to maintain and they grow upwards rather than spreading so they won't be getting in your way, they can reach about 3m tall so can end up being quite a feature and they are one of the best for low-lighting (though like most plants they'll do better with a bit more light!). If that's a bit plain and you've got a bit more light and space, I always prefer the big shape of a fan palm like the Livistona Chinenis. Regarding smaller plants... the list is long! And depending on the conditions, it changes. Start with a good all-round plant like the Spider plant (they're easy to propagate and hard to kill!), then set yourself a challenge with something more interesting like the string-of-pearls plant. My current challenge is a gorgeous wasabi plant, lush leaves and useful!...See MoreAnglophilia
