Rad in the bay to knock off the chill. Put a nice cover on it. Perhaps a built-in settee like one of these that are vented for the rad. If not seating, then put a nice game table and chairs there for entertaining and family time. One sofa and two chairs (all small apartment size) will be most flexible for arranging and rearranging. I will say, for as easy as it sounds to just throw everything you love into a space, it’s actually one of the hardest looks to do really well – that’s not to discourage you of course because when it all comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying! While it may be tempting to just include everything you like from all different styles together in one space, the resulting feeling will be one of over-stimulation and confusion. So the secret of this seamless integration requires creativity and some self-imposed boundaries. Sticking with a structured colour palette will give the room cohesiveness without making the room flat and uninteresting. Start with a neutral base for your larger pieces, your paint colours and/or your flooring as a means of grounding the space. Pay attention to how pieces relate to one another and how they relate to the room as a whole. One oversized piece is absolutely fine but 3 or 4 will make the room look cluttered and uncomfortable. Despite using mid-century hoop chairs alongside a more traditional chesterfield in my own living room, the backs of the chairs are of similar height to the low-lying sofa back. There is continuity of the eyeline and nothing jars too dramatically. You also want to ensure that when borrowing from different eras, you mix and match throughout the space – having a mid-century console table with art of the same era hanging above it and then a Victorian style fireplace with an ornate mirror in a different part of the room is going to look ‘off’. Take that artwork and hang it above the fireplace instead and perhaps use the more ornate mirror above the console table instead! Hope that helps!

Hi Sarah I just noticed your message on here and thought I should answer as I've just finished two sofa sourcing jobs for clients so it's all still fresh in my mind! The best kid friendly fabrics to use would be wool, microfiber or leather. If you decide on a fabric make sure you ask for a rub test and it should always be more than 40,000 as this will ensure that the fabric won't wear out too quickly. Make sure the frames are made of hardwood and not plywood and are screwed and not glued together. Badly made frames reduce the live of a sofa and its comfort factor. The best seat cushions should be feather wrapped foam as these are that comfiest and most practical. Also they plump themselves up so you're not forever doing it yourself. If you're going to look at buying fabric separately for each sectional then you'd need at least 25/30 metres each if not more. This would probably end up being a really expensive option as you would probably need to spend a minimum of £50 per metre for a good quality fabric. I don't know what your budget is but there are loads of great sofa companies out there who can provide you with what you need without having to source fabric elsewhere.. have a look at these.. Loaf, Raft, the sofa and chair co, Willow and Hall, Perch and Parrow, Heals, Swoon, Habitat, Zoffany, Alter London, Sofa and More, John Lewis, Lux Deco. The Luxury of made to measure bespoke furniture is you get to choose exactly what you would like your sofa be from fabric, colour, type of cushion filling to the exact dimensions you require. I also think the other advantage is you can also custom the sofa to fit the space in which it sits to maximise space. I would in my experience say that if you prepared to pay a certain amount for a sofa that there isn't that much in the overall cost but find that you may actually get a bit more for your money for instance a lovely feather foam wrapped cushion against a hallow fibre dacron seat cushion, sprung seat section instead of webbing that kind of thing. If you find a style why not ask for a comparison cost you maybe pleasantly surprised. My only real advise would be to make a full list of specifications for your upholsterer to work to such as how soft you would like the seat so he has some clear guidelines.
