what rug for this space?

Having major issues choosing a rug for this small space in our house. It’s a narrow fairly dark part of the house. However I want something to add a bit of texture and warmth. Just not sure what size and shape would look best. Any advice?

Hi Aimee, I have a few suggestions for you. With your wooden floor you have the liberty of opting for a high pile shaggy rug to add more warmth and texture to your room or a clean low pile rug, potentially a viscose rug or a flat weave cotton rug (the latter not as warm to perch the feet on but looks good). You can get away with round or rectangle. As a rule of thumb though, if rectangle shape, aim to match similar length dimension of rug to the length of your sofa. It's a cleaner look and more symmetrical. In terms of width, big enough that it extends close to mounted TV stand. Personally I think you should opt for rectangle shape. The colour of your painted walls and feature wall are beautiful, so perhaps aim to find a rug with a similar shade to pick up that colour that tie the design scheme together. I would also suggest placing a small coffee table over your rug too. Small enough that it doesn't obstruct the flow of foot traffic going through the room but spruces up this space nicely, and great for eating takeout in front of TV! Hope this helps!

What a wonderful space. I particularly love the height of the space with the changes in levels. The calm restrained palette reminds me of a gallery and would make the perfect backdrop for a piece of art or sculpture. Perhaps something delicate that could hang from the ceiling and be suspended above the floor keeping the area feeling clear and uncluttered but adding some colour and texture. It could be appreciated from all the different levels within this space. If it was my own space then I would make lots of origami flowers and hang them from clear nylon thread - like a giant mobile. It would remind me of the beautiful flower displays that you see in Girona's festival "Temps de flors" and bring a reminder of wonderful holiday memories back home.

I think you feel it looks too solid is because you haven’t followed through with the rest of the room, for example cushions to tie in with it. Further up these comments minnie101 has suggested some black patterned cushions which i think would lift the scheme, however if you really don’t like it then follow your heart and return it. Why keep something you don’t like? Then choose a colour-way that you prefer, such as the blue you suggested. A blue coastal theme would tie in nicely with the neutral theme you have at the moment. By the way, i got a Turkish rug from Olney Carpets in Bucks, and they let us take it home for a week to see if we liked it before buying! True service, and yes we did buy it! Of course buying online does give you that option too. I wish you lots of luck.

I also agree with the above, it’s the sofa that doesn’t match the space. I love the rug and the chair, they match perfectly. Changing your sofa will make the biggest impact to the space. Go for a sofa in a muted co-ordinating colour to the chair rather than matching colour, really to take the eye automatically to the chair and as that is in a more open space, it will make the area feel bigger. Other potential suggestions is if you hung your TV on that wall (slightly higher than it is now) and go for a low level TV unit on legs with doors, it would really open your space up and make it more relaxing. If also go for shelves with storage on the bottom, it would really calm and maximise the space. There are lots of budget options in these styles so you could make a massive difference for not much money. Stick to things on legs, as that really gives the illusion of a bigger area. Hi,

I agree that a rug that's big enough to go under the sofa and almost to the console table would be the best. I'd move the sofa to the middle of the wall and the small table more in front of the sofa.

You could either go for something neutral or I quite like the teal rugs that have a bit of brown and blue/grey in them too. Hope this helps:

Although hou have some lovely elements to your room, it feels a little bit like a hallway, looking at your photo.

I think this is because of the console table and also the other furniture being all squashed against the wall(s).

As already suggested, perhaps consider a coffee table but also a lower stand/table for the TV.
