Need help with design ideas for my living/dining room
Comments (16)Have you thought of rearranging the furniture so the tv isn't the focal point? Furniture against walls can make a room appear smaller. If the budget permits I would add a coffee table to bring furniture into the middle of the room. I would also add a mirror to the dining area to bounce light and maybe install a low hanging pendant light over the table. I would also choose a neutral coloured rug as using a single colour for an item becomes the focal point. Grey is a good modern neutral for walls. If you want to use paper on a smaller wall choose a small pattern that won't date unless you don't mind repapering to keep it up to date. There are some really fantastic papers around at the moment such as chinoiserie, bold contemporary and typography but it depends on your preferred style? Maybe use plain (not patterned as this may date or your taste will change) velvet or silk curtains to soften the room. Use different colours and textures for the accessories to avoid block colours as per comment above. Pattern/interest can also be added in the form of wall art....See MoreNew apartment living room design ideas (w/ my Sketchup drawings)
Comments (7)I think your ideas are spot on for the space. There is a bit of empty space, but you can sort that by tweaking your plan just a little. In the dining area, you could try moving the table further from the kitchen and putting a freestanding island in between, to give you more food prep space. Or, if it's more storage you need, you could add a sideboard where the wall cabinets are, to store dishes, glasses, drinks etc. another possibility is to go for a large round table rather than rectangular. This would fill the space nicely. In the living area, I think you have space for a corner sofa rather than the two seater you have shown, with the sofa and the armchair forming a u shape. The use of a rug to zone the space is perfect. Maybe add a narrow console table behind the sofa? Also, remember that, once you have placed all your large furniture in the room for real, it will be easier to think of little extras to add, like lamps, end tables, plants, etc. That's the fun part! And by accessorising with art, cushions, throws, and all your personal belongings, the space won't feel empty at all. Congrats on a lovely apartment and good luck with it!...See MoreLiving room design ideas
Comments (17)If it's in budget I would block up the arch and replace the brick with a wood surround. I do like your existing fire though but the mantel needs staining and it feels maybe as if that middle section over the burner should come out? I'd put the tv where shown in the 2nd pic. If you rehang the door you may be able to go for 2 x 5ft sofas opposite each other but try it with paper templates. I might go for a 3 seater opposite the fire with a chair in front of the doors though. I like the pudding sofa and chair by loaf (3rd pic although it's a loveseat shown!). If you go for sofa and chair I'd combine fabrics such as neutrals velvet and linen or even a coloured patterned fabric for the chair. For a coffee table I'd either have an upholstered buttoned footstool in a pastel or a glass table as they're both less visually imposing. A "wood" floor with a jute rug for texture. I like the gold twig mirror for a modern look and to add a metallic. Kate Forman does some lovely fabrics for either curtains, lampshade or cushions. If you go neutral for the sofa then I'd add soft pink, green or blue or a combination. The cosiness will come with different textures, pattern, lighting and flowers/plants. If you have the space a bookcase of sorts would be good....See MoreLiving room colour design ideas with black sofa
