Honestly, I think the freestanding tubs are a bit of a fad. They have a wonderful old-fashioned look (and I have an original clawfoot one in my 1920's era bathroom, which I love). But I don't think that a lovely inset tub with a deck around it (which is MUCH more convenient for perching your shampoo or bubblebath or soap) will ever go out of style. What may fluctuate is the popularity of some of the shapes, sizes, and materials. Some contemporary inset tubs I like:

And not too far from the house - as the walk back in - in the cold- when you are wet - isn't always the best bit !! If you put it on grass - add some decking squares or stepping stones to avoid muddy patches - but be careful that they arnt too slippery when wet !! Ours is sunk into our decking - and not too far from the house so we can watch tv or a movie in the garden room while we are in the tub ! :-)

I don't know what country you're in, but if in the UK, ( or anywhere else that's not hot all the time), not covering the hot tub when not in use is going to cost you a small fortune. We have a hot tub and it's now set to sleep or economy mode, which we change when we want to use it. It gets heated every few days when we need to. The temperature going up and down changes the ph levels in the water, which needs to be constantly adjusted to make it safe to sit in. The lids keep the heat in and the temperature constant. Leaving it open to the elements will mean that the temperature will constantly change and affect the ph balance, also, you run the risk of the filter clogging with stuff floating into the tub ( leaves etc ). The big canopies sit behind the tubs and fold back on themselves when you want to use the tub, i don't see that leaving the lid on will spoil your view, but it will affect the water, i'd think twice!

I have a corner bath (due to room size) in one of our en-suite bathrooms (all the other bathrooms have showers). Due to my disability I have to use a chair-style bath lift in it. To cut along explanation short, because the bath is oval and the chair is square, I lose a lot of space at the back of the chair and it means that even though the chair reclines, because of the limited space, I can't lie flat during a bath and have to just sit with my knees a bit bent. (Size-wise without the chair I think an average person could lie in it). It's great if I'm just literally having a quick bath and wash, but I can forget any idea of having a long soak. It just isn't doable. And I see exactly the same problem with that tub. I think you'd regret not being able to lie flat and have a good, relaxing soak. And believe me, sitting hunched without being able stretch out does not make for a leisurely bath.
